Georgia, Michigan, TCU and Ohio State take the top four spots, with Alabama at No. 5, Tennessee at No. 6 and Utah at No. 7 in the post-Week 14 top 25 rankings. With the 14th week of the 2022 season officially in the books, here are the top 25 teams in college football:

College Football Top 25 Rankings (After Week 14)

1. Georgia (13-0)
Week 14 Result:
Defeated LSU

The Bulldogs defeated LSU 50-30 to win their first SEC Championship since 2017. The convincing victory should be more than enough for Georgia to take the No. 1 seed in the CFB Playoff.

2. Michigan (13-0)
Week 14 Result:
Defeated Purdue

A week after beating Ohio State, Michigan didn't suffer from a letdown in a 43-22 victory over Purdue in Big Ten Championship. The Boilermakers had success moving the ball through the air, but the Wolverines forced five field goals and generated two key takeaways. Quarterback J.J. McCarthy threw for 161 yards, and the ground game generated 225 yards behind Donovan Edwards' (185 yards) big night.

3. TCU (12-1)
Week 14 Result:
Lost to Kansas State

The perfect season ended with 31-28 loss to Kansas State in the Big 12 Championship, but TCU has done more than enough to get a trip to the CFB Playoff. Max Duggan's heroics (361 total yards and two scores) rallied the Horned Frogs to overtime. However, K-State's defense made a clutch goal-line stand that was the difference in overtime (and the final outcome).

4. Ohio State (11-1)
Week 14 Result: No Game

USC's loss to Utah should give the Buckeyes a second chance at the CFB Playoff.

8. USC (11-2)
Week 14 Result:
Lost to Utah

An injury to quarterback Caleb Williams clearly impacted USC's offense after a hot start against Utah, but USC's defense was too porous (7.7 yards per play) and struggled with tackling in a 47-24 loss in the Pac-12 Championship. The defeat cost the Trojans a trip to the CFB Playoff.

9. Clemson (11-2)
Week 14 Result:

11. Kansas State (10-3)
Week 14 Result:
Defeated TCU

After K-State's 28-17 lead evaporated in the fourth quarter, the defense responded with a clutch goal-line stop in overtime that gave the offense a chance to move into position for the game-winning field goal. The Wildcats' 31-28 victory over TCU is the program's first Big 12 title since 2003.

The Bulldogs have won five in a row over their in-state rival.

2. Michigan (12-0)
Week 13 Result:
Defeated Ohio State

For the second year in a row, the Wolverines delivered a statement win against their biggest rival. A 45-23 victory over Ohio State clinched a trip to the Big Ten title game and likely ensured Michigan is headed back to the College Football Playoff. A passing game that struggled to hit on big plays for most of the season answered the bell on Saturday, as quarterback J.J. McCarthy torched the Buckeyes for 263 yards and three scores through the air. Also, running back Donovan Edwards ran for two long touchdowns, and the Wolverines allowed only three points in the second half to a high-powered offense.

3. TCU (12-0)
Week 13 Result:
Defeated Iowa State

After a handful of close calls this year, TCU didn’t have sweat much in Saturday’s 62-14 victory over Iowa State. The Horned Frogs scored two times on defense, and quarterback Max Duggan (17 of 24 for 212 yards and three scores) was outstanding once again.

4. USC (11-1)
Week 13 Result:
Defeated Notre Dame

Quarterback Caleb Williams continued to state his case for the Heisman Trophy, and USC moved one step closer to the CFB Playoff with a 38-27 victory over Notre Dame. Williams completed 18 of 22 passes for 232 yards and a touchdown and ran for three other scores on the ground in an all-around brilliant performance. Stopping the run was a concern for the Trojans’ defense all year, but this unit limited the Fighting Irish to just 90 yards on the ground. With a win in the Pac-12 title game next Friday, USC would book a trip to the playoff.

5. Ohio State (11-1)
Week 13 Result:
Lost to Michigan

Different year, same problems for Ohio State against Michigan. The Buckeyes couldn’t stop the big plays on the ground or through the air by the Wolverines. And in the second half, Ohio State’s high-powered offense recorded only 177 yards after having 315 in the first two quarters. Ohio State’s playoff hopes aren’t over, but it needs a loss by USC on Friday night.

6. Alabama (10-2)
Week 13 Result:
Defeated Auburn

Quarterback Bryce Young threw for 343 yards and three scores and added another touchdown on the ground to help Alabama ease past Auburn 49-27. The Crimson Tide have defeated the Tigers six times in a row in Tuscaloosa.

7. Tennessee (10-2)
Week 13 Result:
Defeated Vanderbilt

No Hendon Hooker? No problem for the Volunteers in a 56-0 blowout of Vanderbilt. Quarterback Joe Milton threw for 147 yards, but the real story was Tennessee’s ground game that churned out 362 yards and six scores on just 31 attempts. The win over the Commodores should ensure the Volunteers are in a New Year’s Six bowl.

8. Penn State (10-2)
Week 13 Result:
Defeated Michigan State

The Nittany Lions defeated Michigan State 35-16 to clinch victory No. 10 this year and the program’s first double-digit win total since 2019. Quarterback Sean Clifford threw for 202 yards and four touchdowns in his final start in Happy Valley.

10. Clemson (10-2)
Week 13 Result:
Lost to South Carolina

Any longshot CFB Playoff hopes Clemson harbored ended on Saturday after a 31-30 loss to rival South Carolina. The Tigers’ seven-game winning streak over their in-state rival was stopped due to a lackluster passing game (99 yards) and an inability to stop the Gamecocks’ passing attack (360 yards). Also, three turnovers contributed to the loss.

11. Florida State (9-3)
Week 13 Result
: Defeated Florida

Quarterback Jordan Travis accounted for 353 total yards and three scores to lead Florida State to a thrilling 45-38 victory over Florida on Friday night. 12. LSU (9-3)
Week 13 Result:
Lost to Texas A&M

Brian Kelly’s first year was a massive success with a trip to the SEC Championship up next, but the Tigers ended the regular season on a down note with a 38-23 loss to Texas A&M. LSU had no answer to slow down Devon Achane (215 rushing yards) and a handful of other small mistakes added up to the 15-point defeat in College Station.

13. Kansas State (9-3)
Week 13 Result:
Defeated Kansas

The Wildcats are headed back to the Big 12 Championship Game for the first time since 2003 after Saturday night’s 47-27 win over rival Kansas. The victory was K-State’s 14th in a row over the Jayhawks.

14. Utah (9-3)
Week 13 Result:
Defeated Colorado

The Utes finished their regular season by beating Colorado 63-21 on Saturday night. However, the good news for coach Kyle Whittingham's team didn't stop there. With Oregon's loss to Oregon State and Washington's win over Washington State, Utah clinched a return trip to the Pac-12 title game.

15. Oregon State (9-3)
Week 13 Result: Defeated Oregon

Hopes of a victory seemed bleak when the Beavers trailed 31-10 to Oregon in the third quarter. However, a couple of timely stops, along with a prolific ground game (268 yards) allowed coach Jonathan Smith’s team to rally for a 38-34 victory. Oregon State’s nine victories in ’22 were the most since the ’12 season (9-4).

16. Oregon (9-3)
Week 13 Result:
Lost to Oregon State

The Ducks led Oregon State 31-10 and seemed in control of things late in the third quarter. However, a handful of mistakes, turnovers, and an inability to finish drives came back to haunt coach Dan Lanning's team in the 38-34 loss.

17. UCLA (9-3)
Week 13 Result:
Defeated California

A prolific day on the ground (352 rushing yards) led the way for UCLA in a 35-28 victory over California. The Bruins' 9-3 record is the best mark of coach Chip Kelly's five-year tenure.

18. Tulane (10-2)
Week 13 Result:
Defeated Cincinnati

A big day from running back Tyjae Spears (181 yards and two touchdowns) and the defense (held Cincinnati to 4.9 yards per play) lifted Tulane to a 27-24 win over the Bearcats. The Green Wave will host the American Athletic Conference Championship Game next week and get a chance at revenge after losing to UCF on Nov. 12. The victory gave Tulane its first season of double-digit victories since 1998.

19. Notre Dame (8-4)
Week 13 Result:
Lost to USC

Marcus Freeman’s first regular season concluded with a 38-27 loss at USC on Saturday night. The Fighting Irish made things interesting in the second half, but the defense had no answer to slow down USC quarterback Caleb Williams, while the offense couldn’t finish on a couple of drives and struggled to get the ground game on track (90 yards on 26 attempts).

20. South Carolina (8-4)
Week 13 Result:
Defeated Clemson

A week after stunning Tennessee, Shane Beamer’s team notched its second major upset in a row by winning 31-30 against rival Clemson. Quarterback Spencer Rattler was sharp once again and connected 25 of 39 passes for 260 yards and two touchdowns. Strong special teams play and timely defensive stops (three turnovers) also lifted South Carolina to the upset.

21. Texas (8-4)
Week 13 Result:
Defeated Baylor

The Longhorns defeated Baylor 38-27 on Friday to improve their overall record to 8-4. The eight-win season was a step forward for second-year coach Steve Sarkisian but plenty of work remains for this program. Running back Bijan Robinson ran for 179 yards and two touchdowns against the Bears in what could be his final game in a Longhorn uniform.

22. Mississippi State (8-4)
Week 13 Result
: Defeated Ole Miss

The Golden Egg returned to Starkville after Thursday night’s 24-22 win in Oxford. Mississippi State’s defense limited Ole Miss to just 74 rushing yards and stood tall when it mattered (forced three field goals). Quarterback Will Rogers was also solid (239 yards and two scores) in challenging weather conditions.

23. UCF (10-2)
Week 13 Result:
Defeated USF

The War on I-4 didn’t disappoint. UCF jumped out to a 31-7 lead but watched USF roar back to a 39-38 lead late in the fourth quarter. However, the Knights scored on a touchdown pass with 20 seconds left to end the Bulls’ upset bid and clinch a trip to the AAC Championship. The health of quarterback John Rhys Plumlee looms large going into next week’s game at Tulane.

24. Purdue (8-4)
Week 13 Result:
Defeated Indiana

The Boilermakers knocked off rival Indiana 30-16 and secured the Old Oaken Bucket on Saturday. However, that wasn't the biggest prize of the weekend for coach Jeff Brohm. Thanks to Nebraska's victory over Iowa, and Purdue's win over Indiana, Brohm's team is headed to the Big Ten Championship Game for the first time in program history.

25. UTSA (10-2)
Week 13 Result:
Defeated UTEP

The Roadrunners join the top 25 after rallying from a 31-14 deficit to beat UTEP 34-31 on Saturday. The victory capped a perfect 8-0 season for UTSA in Conference USA games this year. Under coach Jeff Traylor’s watch, the Roadrunners are 22-4 over the last two seasons.

College Football Top 25 Rankings (After Week 12)

1. Georgia (11-0)
Week 12 Result:
Defeated Kentucky

It wasn’t pretty, but Georgia found a way to survive and advance in Lexington to beat Kentucky 16-6. The Bulldogs had trouble finishing drives (three field goals in the red zone) and gave up a couple of plays through the air. However, those small concerns will help coach Kirby Smart keep his team focused into the rivalry game versus Georgia Tech and the SEC title game against LSU.

2. Ohio State (11-0)
Week 12 Result:
Defeated Maryland

A road game a week before playing Michigan is always dangerous, but the Buckeyes found a way to hold off Maryland 43-30. Quarterback C.J. Stroud threw for 241 yards, and freshman running back Dallan Hayden ran for 146 yards and three scores in relief of an injured TreVeyon Henderson and Miyan Williams. Also, the defense stepped up late and forced a fumble that was returned for a touchdown to move the final outcome to 13 points.

3. Michigan (11-0)
Week 12 Result:
Defeated Illinois

Four field goals by kicker Jake Moody – including a 35-yard boot with nine seconds left – helped Michigan beat Illinois 19-17. Running back Blake Corum suffered a knee injury in the first half, and despite returning for a carry in the third quarter, was unable to play the remainder of the game. His status looms large for next week’s showdown at Ohio State. Quarterback J.J. McCarthy (18 of 34) also has to play better for the Wolverines to knock off the Buckeyes.

4. TCU (11-0)
Week 12 Result:
Defeated Baylor

Another week, another thriller for TCU in a last-second 29-28 victory at Baylor. Injuries took a toll on quarterback Max Duggan’s supporting cast, but he delivered once again in the clutch, leading the Horned Frogs on nine-play, 46-yard drive to put Griffin Kell in position to nail the game-winning field goal as time expired.

5. USC (10-1)
Week 12 Result:
Defeated UCLA

A familiar formula guided USC to a 48-45 victory over UCLA. Quarterback Caleb Williams was brilliant (470 passing yards and two touchdowns), and the defense made just enough timely plays to give the Trojans a three-point win and a spot in the Pac-12 title game. The Trojans still have tough obstacles remaining with Notre Dame next Saturday and the conference championship the following week, but coach Lincoln Riley’s team is in the driver’s seat for a trip to the playoff with two more wins.

6. LSU (9-2)
Week 12 Result:
Defeated UAB

Quarterback Jayden Daniels accounted for 408 total yards and two scores in an easy 41-10 victory against UAB. The Tigers limited a standout UAB rushing attack to just 48 yards and pitched a shutout over the final two quarters.

7. Alabama (9-2)
Week 12 Result: Defeated Austin Peay

As expected, Alabama didn’t have to sweat too much in Saturday’s 34-0 victory over Austin Peay. The Crimson Tide outgained the Governors 527 to 206, and the defense allowed just one of the last seven drives to enter Alabama territory. The playoff is still a longshot, but coach Nick Saban’s team has a big one next week in the Iron Bowl against Auburn.

8. Clemson (10-1)
Week 12 Result:
Defeated Miami

Upsets around college football in Week 12 and a dominant 40-10 victory over Miami will keep Clemson’s playoff hopes alive for the next two weeks. The Tigers allowed only 98 yards – with 67 coming on two plays – to the ‘Canes. Quarterback DJ Uiagalelei was steady through the air (227 yards and two scores) and paced the team on the ground (89 yards).

9. Oregon (9-2)
Week 12 Result:
Defeated Utah

The Ducks are a win away from the Pac-12 title game after a hard-fought 20-17 victory over Utah. Quarterback Bo Nix was clearly not at full strength, but his play (287 passing yards), along with a couple of timely stops and takeaways by the defense, was enough for Oregon to win.

10. Tennessee (9-2)
Week 12 Result:
Lost to South Carolina

Tennessee’s playoff hopes ended with a surprising 63-38 loss to South Carolina on Saturday night. The Gamecocks shredded the Volunteers through the air (453 yards and six scores) and punted only once over 12 drives. Quarterback Hendon Hooker’s status for next Saturday's game against Vanderbilt is uncertain after leaving the second half with a knee injury.

11. Penn State (9-2)
Week 12 Result:
Defeated Rutgers

Quarterback Sean Clifford had a quiet day through the air (157 yards), but the Nittany Lions scored twice on defense and once on special teams to cruise to a 55-10 win over Rutgers. Penn State has won its last three games by a combined score of 130-24.

12. Washington (9-2)
Week 12 Result:
Defeated Colorado

The Huskies easily dispatched Colorado 54-7 to keep their Pac-12 title hopes alive on Saturday night. Next week’s Apple Cup could have significant implications for the conference championship, but it’s also an opportunity for Washington to get revenge after Washington State won in Seattle last year.

13. Kansas State (8-3)
Week 12 Result:
Defeated West Virginia

Morgantown can be a tricky place to play, but Kansas State took care of business in a 48-31 win against West Virginia. The victory over the Mountaineers moved coach Chris Klieman’s team to one victory from a trip to the Big 12 title game.

14. Notre Dame (8-3)
Week 12 Result:
Defeated Boston College

Total domination is the easiest way to sum up Notre Dame’s 44-0 win over Boston College. The ground game churned out 281 yards behind Logan Diggs (122) and Audric Estime (71), while the Fighting Irish defense limited the Eagles to only 173 yards.

15. UCLA (8-3)
Week 12 Result:
Lost to USC

Quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson turned in a heroic performance (390 total yards and six overall scores), but four turnovers and a defense that had no answers against the pass (470 yards allowed) doomed UCLA’s hopes of a victory against USC.

16. Utah (8-3)
Week 12 Result:
Lost to Oregon

The Utes had opportunities (three drives without scores in Oregon territory) but fell short of a road win in Autzen Stadium (20-17). Quarterback Cam Rising tossed three picks, and the offense was unable to generate any big gains (no play went longer than 18 yards) in the defeat.

17. Florida State (8-3)
Week 12 Result:
Defeated Louisiana

With rival Florida up next, it would’ve been easy for Florida State to have a sluggish showing against Louisiana. Instead, the Seminoles dominated from the opening snap, winning 49-17 to earn their fourth victory in a row. The ground attack recorded 251 yards, while the defense limited the Ragin’ Cajuns to just 4.1 yards per play.

18. North Carolina (9-2)
Week 12 Result:
Lost to Georgia Tech

The Tar Heels seemed poised for an easy win after jumping out to a 17-0 lead against Georgia Tech. However, things fell apart after that fast start, as North Carolina dropped a surprising 21-17 game to the Yellow Jackets. The Tar Heels averaged only 3.7 yards per play in the second half, and the defense allowed Georgia Tech to put together a couple of long drives, which was just enough to pull off the upset and end any longshot hopes of North Carolina of making the CFB Playoff.

19. Tulane (9-2)
Week 12 Result:
Defeated SMU

A week after a disappointing loss to UCF, Tulane took its frustration out on SMU with a 59-24 victory on Thursday night. The Green Wave pounded the Mustangs for 310 rushing yards and five scores, and the defense limited SMU’s high-powered offense to just 4.9 yards per play. Tulane will host the AAC Championship Game if it beats Cincinnati on Friday.

20. Oregon State (8-3)
Week 12 Result:
Defeated Arizona State

Week 12 Result:
Lost to Arkansas

Despite a productive day on the stat sheet (703 total yards), Ole Miss left Arkansas with a 42-27 loss and its third defeat in four games. The Rebels couldn’t slow the Razorbacks on the ground early on (335 rushing yards) and trailed 42-6 early in the third quarter before making the final score more respectable in the final 15 minutes.

22. Cincinnati (9-2)
Week 12 Result:
Defeated Temple

The Bearcats suffocated Temple’s offense (202 total yards and three points) in a dominant 23-3 victory. Cincinnati can book a return trip to the AAC title game with a win over Tulane next week. The status of quarterback Ben Bryant is uncertain after he left Saturday’s game due to injury.

23. Coastal Carolina (9-1)
Week 12 Result:
Off Week

Coastal Carolina’s Week 12 matchup at Virginia was canceled. The Chanticleers play at James Madison next Saturday.

Lost to Navy

A week after winning at Tulane to take control of the American Athletic Conference title race, the Knights suffered a surprising 17-14 defeat to Navy. 2. Ohio State (10-0)
Week 11 Result:
Defeated Indiana

As expected, Ohio State dominated on both sides of the ball to crush Indiana 56-14. Injuries in the backfield are adding up for coach Ryan Day’s team, however. TreVeyon Henderson should return soon, but Miyan Williams left with an injury after rushing for 147 yards on 15 carries.

3. Michigan (10-0)
Week 11 Result:
Defeated Nebraska

Another week, another dominant victory for Michigan. The Wolverines dominated from the opening snap, dispatching Nebraska 34-3 on Saturday afternoon. 4. Tennessee (9-1)
Week 11 Result:
Defeated Missouri

A week after Georgia’s defense kept Tennessee’s offense in check, the Volunteers posted 724 yards in a 66-24 rout of Missouri. Quarterback Hendon Hooker added to his Heisman profile with 355 passing yards and three touchdowns, with receiver Jalin Hyatt (seven catches for 146 yards) as the No. 1 target. Upcoming games against South Carolina and Vanderbilt should help Tennessee get to 11-1 and make a strong case for the CFB Playoff.

5. TCU (10-0)
Week 11 Result:
Defeated Texas

A 17-10 victory at Texas is a statement win for coach Sonny Dykes’ squad. The Horned Frogs were a touchdown underdog but leaned on a standout defensive effort (3.3 yards per play) and got a few timely plays on offense to leave Austin with the victory. The win over the Longhorns also booked a trip for TCU to the Big 12 title game.

6. LSU (8-2)
Week 11 Result:
Defeated Arkansas

Freshman linebacker Harold Perkins Jr. recorded eight tackles (four for a loss), four sacks and two forced fumbles in a monster defensive effort to ensure LSU wouldn’t have a hangover loss to Arkansas. The Tigers managed only 284 total yards in a 13-10 victory, but Saturday’s win in Fayetteville (and Alabama’s victory against Ole Miss) clinched the SEC West title for coach Brian Kelly.

7. Alabama (8-2)
Week 11 Result:
Defeated Ole Miss

Assessing Alabama’s motivation with the SEC West out of reach and road struggles this year was a huge question coming into Saturday’s game at Ole Miss. Although the performance was far from perfect, the Crimson Tide deserve credit for not packing it in and winning in a tough spot. Quarterback Bryce Young threw for 209 yards and three scores, the rushing attack churned out valuable yardage in the second half, and the defense made a couple of timely stops late to secure the win.

8. USC (9-1)
Week 11 Result:
Defeated Colorado

The Trojans had a sluggish start but pulled away for a 55-17 victory over Colorado on Friday night. The news from the win wasn’t all good for coach Lincoln Riley, as running back Travis Dye suffered a season-ending injury against the Buffaloes.

9. Clemson (9-1)
Week 11 Result:
Defeated Louisville

It wasn’t perfect, but Clemson got a much-needed 31-16 victory over Louisville to keep its playoff hopes alive and erase some of the bad feelings from last week’s loss at Notre Dame. Turnovers (three) and some iffy defensive play (six yards a play allowed) need to be addressed. Quarterback DJ Uiagalelei played most of the way at quarterback and accounted for 217 total yards and two scores.

10. Utah (8-2)
Week 11 Result:
Defeated Stanford

Quarterback Cam Rising threw for 219 yards and three touchdowns, while running back Tavion Thomas accumulated 180 yards and two scores on the ground to lead Utah to an easy 42-7 win over Stanford. Up next: A huge road date at Oregon.

14. Oregon (8-2)
Week 11 Result:
Lost to Washington

The Ducks’ playoff hopes ended after Washington stunned coach Dan Lanning’s team 37-34 in Eugene. Oregon simply had no answers on defense to stop the Huskies’ passing game (408 yards). However, the Ducks are still in good shape to play for a Pac-12 title if it can beat Utah and Oregon State in the next two weeks.

15. Ole Miss (8-2)
Week 11 Result:
Lost to Alabama

The Rebels outgained Alabama (403 to 317), but three drives that ended in Crimson Tide territory without points were a big reason why coach Lane Kiffin’s team came up just short in a 30-24 loss. The defeat eliminated Ole Miss from SEC West contention. However, with wins over Arkansas and Mississippi State the next two weeks, the Rebels would have double-digit victories for the second year in a row.

16. UCLA (8-2)
Week 11 Result:
Lost to Arizona

The Bruins outgained Arizona 465 to 436, but the Wildcats did a better job at finishing drives and got key a defensive stop or two with the game up for grabs.

17. Kansas State (7-3)
Week 11 Result:
Defeated Baylor

Will Howard delivered once again (19 of 27 for 196 yards and three scores) after Adrian Martinez was lost due to injury in a surprisingly dominant 31-3 victory over Baylor. In addition to Howard’s clutch play, the Wildcats got 156 total yards from running back Deuce Vaughn, while the defense forced two turnovers and got two stops on fourth down to prevent any Baylor comeback.

18. Notre Dame (7-3)
Week 11 Result:
Defeated Navy

It was a tale of two halves in Baltimore, but Notre Dame held on for a 35-32 over Navy. The Fighting Irish led 35-13 at the half behind an offense that averaged 9.2 yards per play. However, the offense recorded only 12 yards in the second half, and the defense gave up 19 points over the final two quarters. Although coach Marcus Freeman has plenty to work on, his team successfully avoided a massive letdown after the win versus Clemson last week.

19. Florida State (7-3)

The Knights are in full control of the AAC and a trip to a New Year's Six bowl after a 38-31 victory at Tulane. Quarterback John Rhys Plumlee led a ground game that rushed for 336 yards, and the defense limited a standout Green Wave rushing attack to just 155 yards (with 70 coming on one play).

21. Tulane (8-2)
Week 11 Result:
Lost to UCF

Defense and the ground game were two strengths of Tulane in 2022, but both areas struggled in Saturday's 38-31 loss to UCF. Although the defeat is a setback, coach Willie Fritz's squad can still get to the conference title game by beating SMU and Cincinnati in its next two games.

22. Cincinnati (8-2)

25. Oklahoma State (7-3)

3. Michigan (9-0)
Week 10 Result:
Defeated Rutgers

Week 10 Result:
Lost to Georgia

Tennessee’s perfect season ended with a 27-13 loss in Athens, but the news wasn’t all bad for coach Josh Heupel’s team. 8. Alabama (7-2)
Week 10 Result:
Lost to LSU

From heavy favorite to win it all in 2022 to outside of the College Football Playoff. That’s the storyline for the Crimson Tide after Saturday night’s loss in Baton Rouge. Week 10 Result:
Defeated California

It wasn’t pretty, but USC eventually held off California in a 41-35 shootout on Saturday night. Quarterback Caleb Williams led the way with 360 passing yards and four scores, and the Trojans needed every bit of that performance with a leaky defense (469 total yards by California).

Freshman quarterback MJ Morris (18 of 28 for 210 yards and three scores) and three takeaways by the defense was enough for NC State to win 30-21 over Wake Forest. Losing Devin Leary was a significant blow to the Wolfpack’s offense, but Morris has stepped up in a big way the last two games.

Lost to Michigan State

Missed opportunities were to blame for Illinois’ surprising 23-15 defeat to Michigan State. Defeated Kentucky

No lookahead in Knoxville: Tennessee easily dispatched Kentucky 44-6 to set up a huge showdown in Athens against Georgia next weekend. 2. Georgia (8-0)
Week 9 Result:
Defeated Florida

Florida made things interesting in the third quarter, but Georgia simply had too much on both sides of the ball and pulled away late for a 42-20 win in Jacksonville. Defeated Penn State

Penn State always gives Ohio State trouble, so it was no surprise coach Ryan Day’s team had to work hard in Happy Valley. Quarterback C.J. 14. Kansas State (6-2)
Week 9 Result:
Defeated Oklahoma State

Total domination. That’s the best way to sum up K-State’s 48-0 win over Oklahoma State. In addition to strong play by the defense, backup quarterback Will Howard threw for 296 yards and four scores in relief of Adrian Martinez. Running back Deuce Vaughn gashed the Cowboys for 158 rushing yards.

21. Syracuse (6-2)
Week 9 Result:
Lost to Notre Dame

Notre Dame’s edge at the line of scrimmage and an injury to quarterback Garrett Shrader was too much for Syracuse to overcome in a 41-24 loss. The Orange have lost two in a row and tough matchups against Pitt (road), Florida State and Wake Forest (road) are on tap next.

Week 8 Result:
Defeated Syracuse

The Tigers kept their unbeaten record and CFB Playoff hopes alive thanks to 17 points in the fourth quarter to beat Syracuse 27-21. A sloppy day by the offense (four turnovers) forced coach Dabo Swinney to make a change under center to Cade Klubnik, and while the freshman provided a spark, running back Will Shipley (172 yards and two scores), and the defense were the reasons for a second-half rally.

6. Alabama (7-1)
Week 8 Result:
Defeated Mississippi State

A late touchdown prevented a shutout, but Alabama rebounded from last week’s loss at Tennessee with another dominant victory over Mississippi State (30-6). 7. TCU (7-0)
Week 8 Result:
Defeated Kansas State

Another week, another second-half comeback for TCU. The Horned Frogs appeared to be in real trouble once Kansas State opened a 28-10 lead in the second quarter. 8. Oregon (6-1)
Week 8 Result:
Defeated UCLA

In a game where both teams had high-powered offenses, small things added up for Oregon’s 45-30 win over UCLA. Quarterback Bo Nix was brilliant (22 of 28 for 283 yards and five touchdowns through the air), and the defense made stops when it mattered (three field goals forced). UCLA’s defense had no answer for Oregon’s offense (545 yards and 7.4 yards per play) in Saturday’s 45-30 loss in Eugene. A looming showdown against USC on Nov. 19 should decide whether or not UCLA gets another shot at Oregon in the Pac-12 title game.

12. Penn State (6-1)

Defeated Minnesota

A week after a 41-17 loss to Michigan, the Nittany Lions got a much-needed rebound effort in a 45-17 win over Minnesota. The Orange dropped their first game of the year (27-21 at Clemson) but won’t drop far in our rankings after a good showing in Death Valley. The lack of carries or touches (10 overall) for running back Sean Tucker was puzzling, however.

The Fighting Illini were off in Week 8 and return to action next Saturday at Nebraska.

21. Cincinnati (6-1)

A combination of timely stops on defense, a few big plays on offense and good special teams lifted Cincinnati to a 29-27 win at SMU. The Bearcats have won 19 in a row over AAC foes.

22. North Carolina (6-1)
Week 8 Result:
Off Week

The Tar Heels were off in Week 8 and return to action on Saturday at home against Pitt. Considering the other six teams in the Coastal Division all have at least two losses in conference play, coach Mack Brown’s team is moving closer to a trip to Charlotte.

23. Tulane (7-1)
Week 8 Result:
Defeated Memphis

Memphis made things interesting with 28 points in the second half, but a 35-0 run to start the game was enough for Tulane to hold on for a 38-35 victory. The Green Wave have matched the highest win total (seven) of a single season in coach Willie Fritz’s tenure.

24. NC State (5-2)

Quarterback Hendon Hooker (385 passing yards and five touchdowns) and receiver Jalin Hyatt (six catches for 207 yards and five scores) were outstanding, and Tennessee’s defense came up with a clutch stop in the fourth quarter to get the ball back to the offense for the winning drive.

2. Georgia (7-0)
Week 7 Result:
Defeated Vanderbilt

As expected, the Bulldogs cruised to an easy 55-0 victory over Vanderbilt. The offense recorded 579 yards of offense thanks to an efficient day by quarterback Stetson Bennett (24 of 30 for 289 yards). Georgia’s defense allowed only 150 yards to the Commodores.

After the Seminoles scored two touchdowns, the Tigers held them scoreless on six straight drives to score a 34-28 win in Tallahassee.

6. Alabama (6-1)
Week 7 Result:
Lost to Tennessee

Bryce Young was outstanding in his return from a shoulder injury (35 of 52 for 455 yards and two touchdowns), but Alabama once again made uncharacteristic mistakes and couldn’t slow Tennessee’s offense when it mattered. The 52-49 loss was the Crimson Tide’s first loss to the Volunteers since 2006.

7. TCU (6-0)
Week 7 Result:
Defeated Oklahoma State

The Horned Frogs trailed 24-7 in the second quarter but rallied for a 43-40 win in overtime against Oklahoma State. The victory kept TCU among the ranks of the unbeaten and in the driver’s seat to claim the top spot in the Big 12. Off Week

The Ducks were off in Week 7 and return to action next Saturday against UCLA.

11. USC (6-1)

12. Oklahoma State (5-1)
Week 7 Result:
Lost to TCU

The Cowboys seemed poised to leave Fort Worth with a victory after opening a 24-7 lead. However, that lead evaporated, and coach Mike Gundy’s team dropped its first game of the year with an eventual overtime 43-30 loss to TCU. Oklahoma State’s defense allowed just one score on the Horned Frogs’ first five drives, but TCU scored on five of its last seven to rally for the win.

The Wildcats were off in Week 7 and return to action next Saturday at TCU.

18. Texas (5-2)

Defeated Iowa State

Perhaps Texas had a post-Oklahoma hangover, and it wasn’t necessarily pretty, but coach Steve Sarkisian will take a 24-21 win over Iowa State. After a touchdown clutch catch by Xavier Worthy on fourth down with under five minutes left, a fumble recovery on the Cyclones' ensuing drive secured the victory for the Longhorns.

19. Illinois (6-1)
Week 7 Result:
Defeated Minnesota

Bret Bielema has Illinois bowl eligible in just his second year. However, this team has bigger goals in mind after Saturday’s 26-14 win against Minnesota: A Big Ten West Division title. 22. NC State (5-2)

23. Cincinnati (5-1)

1. Alabama (6-0)

Jalen Milroe completed 12 of 19 passes for 111 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 83 yards on the ground in relief of an injured Bryce Young. However, Milroe had three of Alabama’s four turnovers, and as a whole, the offense averaged only 5.7 yards per attempt. Getting Young back in the lineup is a must if the Crimson Tide want to beat Tennessee next Saturday.

2. Georgia (6-0)

Also, Tennessee’s defense generated five sacks and limited the Tigers to just 355 yards.

7. USC (6-0)

Washington State gave USC all it could handle early on, but the Trojans used a strong second half effort on defense to pull away for a 30-14 victory. Running back Travis Dye (149 yards and a score) led the way on offense, while quarterback Caleb Williams threw for 188 yards and two touchdowns.

8. Oklahoma State (5-0)

17. Kansas State (5-1)
Week 6 Result:
Defeated Iowa State

K-State snapped a two-game losing streak in the Farmageddon series by beating Iowa State 10-9 on Saturday night. The Wildcats held the Cyclones to three field goals after long drives, while the offense got just enough production, including an 81-yard touchdown catch by Phillip Brooks to score the one-point win.

18. Kansas (5-1)
Week 6 Result:
Lost to TCU

Lawrence was the center of college football for a battle of unbeaten teams on Saturday, and despite an injury to quarterback Jalon Daniels, TCU-Kansas certainly delivered with a 38-31 finish. The Jayhawks fell short of getting to 6-0, but coach Lance Leipold’s team still deserves a spot in the top 25.

19. Utah (4-2)
Week 6 Result:
Lost to UCLA

Utah’s hopes of running the table and a trip to the CFB Playoff are over after Saturday’s loss at UCLA. The Utes uncharacteristically had troubles against the run on defense (212 yards allowed), and the offense was unable to generate any big plays or get consistent production on the ground (4.5 yards a carry).

20. Syracuse (5-0)
Week 6 Result:
Off Week

The Orange were off in Week 6 and host NC State next Saturday.

College Football Top 25 Rankings (After Week 5)

1. Alabama (5-0)
Week 5 Result:
Defeated Arkansas

The Crimson Tide had to overcome an in-game injury to quarterback Bryce Young, but big-time efforts from running back Jahmyr Gibbs (206 yards) and backup quarterback Jalen Milroe (77-yard run) prevented coach Nick Saban’s team from losing in Fayetteville. Alabama has now won 16 games in a row against Arkansas after Saturday’s 49-26 win.

2. Georgia (5-0)
Week 5 Result:
Defeated Missouri

Upset avoided. The Bulldogs had an off performance for the second week in a row but rallied from a 16-3 deficit to win 26-22 in Columbia. Coach Kirby Smart’s team has room to improve up front (169 rushing yards on 35 carries) and in the red zone (four field goals), but the defense held Missouri to just 294 yards.

3. Ohio State (5-0)
Week 5 Result:
Defeated Rutgers

As expected, Ohio State cruised to a 49-10 victory over Rutgers. Quarterback C.J. Ohio State has defeated Rutgers nine straight times by 22 or more points.

4. Michigan (5-0)
Week 5 Result:
Defeated Iowa

Kinnick Stadium has been a tough place for Michigan to play in recent years, but the Wolverines avoided the upset thanks to a solid all-around performance on both sides of the ball. Quarterback J.J. McCarthy threw for 155 yards, the ground game churned out 172 yards, and the defense recorded four sacks and allowed just 35 rushing yards.

5. Clemson (5-0)
Week 5 Result:
Defeated NC State

Another week, another big ACC victory for Clemson. Quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei turned in another standout performance (282 total yards and three overall scores), and the defense limited NC State to just four yards a play in a 30-20 win in Death Valley on Saturday night. Clemson’s defensive front was instrumental in the win, as this unit allowed only 34 rushing yards and sacked quarterback Devin Leary three times. After beating Wake Forest last week, the Tigers have already scored two huge victories against teams in the mix to push coach Dabo Swinney’s team in the Atlantic.

6. USC (5-0)
Week 5 Result:
Defeated Arizona State

USC's offense is back on track after a sluggish performance at Oregon State. Quarterback Caleb Williams threw for 348 yards and three scores to guide the Trojans to a 42-25 victory over Arizona State on Saturday night. The defense gave up scoring drives to the Sun Devils on their first three possessions but played better into the second half.

7. Tennessee (4-0)
Week 5 Result:
Off Week

The Volunteers were off on Saturday and return to action next week at LSU.

8. Oklahoma State (4-0)
Week 5 Result:
Defeated Baylor

The Cowboys look like the best team in a wide-open race to win the Big 12 after coach Mike Gundy’s squad picked up a 36-25 road victory at Baylor on Saturday. Quarterback Spencer Sanders accounted for 256 total yards and two scores, while the defense made timely stops on key downs and forced two takeaways.

9. Penn State (5-0)
Week 5 Result:
Defeated Northwestern

It wasn’t pretty, but the Nittany Lions edged Northwestern 17-7 to remain unbeaten. Running backs Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen combined for 220 yards on 42 attempts, and Penn State’s defense limited the Wildcats to just 3.7 yards per snap.

10. Ole Miss (5-0)
Week 5 Result:
Defeated Kentucky

Saturday’s win over Kentucky gave Ole Miss its first 5-0 start since 2014. The Rebels ran for 186 yards (4.8 yards per carry), and the defense forced a couple of takeaways with the game on the line to secure the victory.

11. Kentucky (4-1)
Week 5 Result:
Lost to Ole Miss

Errors on special teams and fumbles on back-to-back drives to end the game cost Kentucky a chance to win in a 22-19 defeat in Oxford. Up next: The SEC home opener against South Carolina.

12. Utah (4-1)
Week 5 Result:
Defeated Oregon State

The Utes converted four Oregon State interceptions into 21 points to pull away for a 42-16 victory in Salt Lake City. Utah has reeled off four wins in a row since losing to Florida in the opener. Also, coach Kyle Whittingham’s team has won each of its first two Pac-12 games by more than 20 points.

14. BYU (4-1)
Week 5 Result:
Defeated Utah State

It wasn’t BYU’s best performance, but coach Kalani Sitake’s team eventually pulled away for a 38-26 victory over Utah State. Quarterback Jaren Hall threw for 274 yards and three scores, while the only touchdown the defense allowed in the second half came when the outcome was no longer in doubt.

15. Wake Forest (4-1)
Week 5 Result:
Defeated Florida State

The Demon Deacons rebounded in a big way from last week’s overtime loss to Clemson. Quarterback Sam Hartman threw for 234 yards and two touchdowns to guide Wake Forest to a 31-21 victory over Florida State in Tallahassee. The Demon Deacons couldn’t afford to start 0-2 in ACC play if they wanted to push for the division crown once again, so the victory on Saturday could have larger implications for the conference title battle.

16. NC State (4-1)
Week 5 Result:
Lost to Clemson

There's no shame in losing a 30-20 road matchup against Clemson in Death Valley, but coach Dave Doeren's team needs more out of its offense (279 total yards) to rebound and push for double-digit victories this year. The Wolfpack's ground game managed only 34 yards over 21 attempts.

17. Kansas (5-0)
Week 5 Result:
Defeated Iowa State

Kansas’ high-powered offense was held in check (213 yards), yet coach Lance Leipold’s team found a way to win 14-11 over Iowa State. The Cyclones helped the Jayhawks with three missed three field goals, but the KU defense allowed just 26 rushing yards and didn’t give up much in the way of big passing plays. The Jayhawks are 5-0 for the first time since ’09.

18. UCLA (5-0)
Week 5 Result:
Defeated Washington

A huge performance from quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson (368 total yards and four scores) and a couple of timely stops by the defense was enough for UCLA to beat Washington 40-32 on Friday night. The Bruins are 5-0 for the first time since ’13.

19. TCU (4-0)
Week 5 Result:
Defeated Oklahoma

TCU joins the top 25 after a complete dismantling of Oklahoma. New coach Sonny Dykes has brought a much-needed spark to the offense, as this unit averaged 8.9 yards per snap and scored four times on plays of 60-plus yards. It wasn't just the offense contributing to the 55-24 win, as TCU's defense held the Sooners to just 355 yards over 81 snaps.

20. Washington (4-1)
Week 5 Result:
Lost to UCLA

Washington dropped from the ranks of the unbeaten after a 40-32 loss to UCLA on Friday night. The Huskies recorded 416 yards on offense, but quarterback Michael Penix Jr. tossed two picks, and the ground game struggled with just 71 yards over 23 attempts. Washington’s defense also had its worst performance of the season, surrendering nearly seven yards per play (6.9) to the Bruins and allowing 10 third-down conversions over 14 attempts.

21. Kansas State (4-1)
Week 5 Result:
Defeated Texas Tech

Adrian Martinez ran for more than 100 yards for the second week in a row and lifted K-State to a 37-28 victory over Texas Tech. Martinez and running back Deuce Vaughn combined for 343 yards on the ground, and although the defense gave up 473 yards to the Red Raiders, this unit forced four takeaways and registered six sacks.

22. Cincinnati (4-1)

Quarterback Ben Bryant threw for 166 yards and two scores to guide a Cincinnati offense that averaged 6.2 yards a snap.

23. Florida State (4-1)
Week 5 Result:
Lost to Wake Forest

A 28-7 deficit was too much for the Seminoles to dig out of in Saturday's 31-21 loss to Wake Forest. Quarterback Jordan Travis threw for 281 yards and three scores, but Florida State's defense struggled in key situations (10 of 18 third-down conversions allowed), and kicker Ryan Fitzgerald missed two field goals.

24. LSU (4-1)
Week 5 Result:
Defeated Auburn

The LSU-Auburn series has produced some wild endings and strange games, so it was no surprise Saturday night's matchup was a crazy affair. The LSU offense was outgained 438 to 270 and completed just 10 of 26 throws as a team, but the defense stepped up with a fumble return for a score and no points allowed in the second half.

25. Mississippi State (4-1)
Week 5 Result:
Defeated Texas A&M

Thanks to a strong effort from quarterback Will Rogers (329 yards and three scores), the Bulldogs earned their second win in a row over Texas A&M with a 42-24 outcome on Saturday. In addition to Rogers' strong play, Mississippi State returned a blocked field goal for a touchdown and limited the Aggies to just 112 yards in the first half to set the stage for an 18-point win.

Defeated Kent State

Kent State gave Georgia a tougher battle than most expected, but coach Kirby Smart’s team still won by 17 in a 39-22 victory. The Bulldogs lost three turnovers and gave up 5.4 yards per play to the Golden Flashes, so Smart and his staff will have plenty to work on this week.

2. Alabama (4-0)
Week 4 Result:
Defeated Vanderbilt

As expected, the Crimson Tide cruised to a big win (55-3) over Vanderbilt on Saturday night. Alabama has won three out of its four games this season by 50 or more points. The defense allowed only 129 yards to the Commodores, while quarterback Bryce Young was sharp (25 of 36 for 385 yards and four touchdowns).

3. Ohio State (4-0)
Week 4 Result:
Defeated Wisconsin

Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s absence didn’t slow Ohio State’s offense on Saturday night. The Buckeyes simply recorded 539 yards (7.7 per snap) against a standout Wisconsin defense in a 52-21 victory. Quarterback C.J. Stroud threw for 281 yards and five scores over 17 completions.

4. Michigan (4-0)
Week 4 Result:
Defeated Maryland

Maryland represented a step up in competition from Michigan’s first three games (Colorado State, Hawaii and UConn) and gave coach Jim Harbaugh’s team all it could handle. The Wolverines used a strong effort (243 rushing yards) from running back Blake Corum to hold off the Terrapins’ upset bid, but the defense (397 yards allowed) needs work.

5. Clemson (4-0)
Week 4 Result:
Defeated Wake Forest

Clemson has dominated Wake Forest in recent years, but coach Dabo Swinney’s team needed overtime to outlast the Demon Deacons 51-45 in Winston-Salem. Quarterback DJ Uiagalelei threw for 371 yards and five touchdowns and accounted for 52 yards on the ground to lead the Tigers to a victory. Injuries in the secondary were problematic for Clemson’s usually stout defense, as Wake Forest threw for 337 yards and drew several penalties on the defensive backs for pass interference.

6. USC (4-0)
Week 4 Result:
Defeated Oregon State

The Trojans edged Oregon State 17-14 in a hard-fought battle in Corvallis to remain unbeaten. Quarterback Caleb Williams had an uneven performance (16 of 36 for 180 yards) but made a clutch run to convert a fourth down and later tossed a touchdown pass to Jordan Addison to secure the win. USC’s defense also forced four turnovers.

7. Tennessee (4-0)
Week 4 Result:
Defeated Florida

The Tennessee-Florida series has been a one-sided affair with the Gators owning the Volunteers, but at least for 2022, the momentum shifted in favor of Rocky Top. Hendon Hooker threw for 349 yards and two touchdowns and added 112 yards and one score on the ground to lift Tennessee to a 38-33 victory over Florida. The defense gave up 594 yards but made enough timely stops to get the ball back to Hooker.

8. Kentucky (4-0)
Week 4 Result:
Defeated Northern Illinois

The Wildcats continue to struggle up front in pass protection (five sacks allowed) and in rushing offense (103 yards), but quarterback Will Levis (303 yards) was enough to hold off upset-minded Northern Illinois for a 31-23 win.

9. Penn State (4-0)
Week 4 Result:
Defeated Central Michigan

Quarterback Sean Clifford completed 22 of 34 passes for 217 yards and three scores to lead Penn State to a 33-14 win over Central Michigan. The Nittany Lions will be a big favorite next week over Northwestern and have a looming showdown against Michigan on Oct. 15.

10. Oklahoma State (3-0)
Week 4 Result:
Off Week

The Cowboys were off on Saturday and return to action on Oct. 1 at Baylor.

11. Utah (3-1)
Week 4 Result:
Defeated Arizona State

An injury to tight end Brant Kuithe was the only downside to Utah’s 34-13 win over Arizona State on Saturday night. The Utes face a critical four-game stretch in their quest to get back into playoff contention: Oregon State, at UCLA, USC, and at Washington State.

12. Oregon (3-1)
Week 4 Result:
Defeated Washington State

A 29-point fourth quarter helped the Ducks escape Pullman with a 44-41 victory over Washington State. Oregon had to overcome early red zone woes (three field goals) and an interception returned for a touchdown to avoid the upset loss to the Cougars.

13. Washington (4-0)
Week 4 Result:
Defeated Stanford

Michael Penix threw for 309 yards and two touchdowns to guide Washington to a 40-22 win over Stanford. The Huskies are 4-0 for the first time since 2017.

14. NC State (4-0)
Week 4 Result:
Defeated UConn

Quarterback Devin Leary threw for 320 yards and four touchdowns to lift NC State to a 41-10 victory over UConn. The Wolfpack’s schedule will get significantly tougher the next two weeks with a road trip to Clemson on Oct. 1, followed by a home matchup against Florida State on Oct. 8.

15. BYU (3-1)

Defeated Wyoming

The Cougars used a big night from quarterback Jaren Hall (337 passing yards and four touchdowns) to guide an offense that averaged 8.3 yards per snap in a 38-24 win over Wyoming.

Week 4 Result:
Defeated Iowa State

After struggling in a road loss to BYU, Baylor quarterback Blake Shapen threw for 238 yards and three touchdowns to lift the Bears to a 31-24 win in Ames. Next up: A huge showdown against Oklahoma State in Waco.

17. Texas A&M (3-1)
Week 4 Result:
Defeated Arkansas

The Aggies return to the rankings after a key SEC West victory over Arkansas. Coach Jimbo Fisher’s team hasn’t solved all of its offensive woes, but running back Devon Achane came up big (159 rushing yards), and the defense returned a fumble for a touchdown to give Texas A&M just enough in a 23-21 win.

18. Arkansas (3-1)
Week 4 Result:
Lost to Texas A&M

The Razorbacks suffered their first loss of 2022 in heartbreaking fashion. With a 14-7 lead and on the goal-line to score another touchdown, Arkansas quarterback K.J. Jefferson lost a fumble that was returned for a touchdown by Texas A&M. The Razorbacks weren’t the same team after that but fought back for a chance to win. However, a field-goal attempt with under two minutes remaining hit off the top of the upright, dropping Arkansas to 1-10 against the Aggies in SEC play.

19. Oklahoma (3-1)
Week 4 Result:
Lost to Kansas State

The Sooners suffered their first loss under new coach Brent Venables with a 41-34 defeat to Kansas State. Oklahoma struggled to contain K-State quarterback Adrian Martinez (372 total yards and five scores) and struggled on key downs (just four third-down conversions on 13 attempts) on offense.

20. Wake Forest (3-1)
Week 4 Result:
Lost to Clemson

No shame for the Demon Deacons in a 51-45 overtime loss to Clemson. Quarterback Sam Hartman was excellent (20 of 29 for 337 yards and six touchdowns), but Wake Forest just came up short in overtime on both sides of the ball.

21. Florida State (4-0)
Week 4 Result:
Defeated Boston College

Quarterback Jordan Travis returned to the lineup after an injury against Louisville last Friday and guided the Seminoles to a 44-14 win over Boston College. Travis threw for 321 yards and a touchdown, and the defense limited the Eagles to just 235 yards.

22. Minnesota (4-0)
Week 4 Result:
Defeated Michigan State

The Golden Gophers join the rankings after steamrolling Michigan State 34-7 in East Lansing. A balanced attack (268 through the air and 240 on the ground) guided the offense to 6.9 yards a snap, and Minnesota’s defense held the Spartans to 240 yards and allowed just two third-down conversions on eight attempts.

23. Ole Miss (4-0)
Week 4 Result:
Defeated Tulsa

Lane Kiffin’s team completed its non-conference slate with a perfect 4-0 mark, but the Rebels had to work harder (35-27) than most expected against Tulsa. A stingy defense allowed 457 yards to the Golden Hurricane, with 262 coming on the ground. Kiffin and his staff have plenty to tune up before next week’s game against Kentucky.

24. Kansas (4-0)
Week 4 Result:
Defeated Duke

Lance Leipold’s remarkable turnaround effort in Lawrence continued on Saturday with a 35-27 victory over Duke. The Jayhawks are now 4-0 for the first time since 2009. College Football Top 25 Rankings (After Week 3)

1. Georgia (3-0)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated South Carolina

Another week, another dominant performance by the Bulldogs. Georgia’s defense allowed just 4.8 yards per play to the Gamecocks and over 100 of the 306 yards allowed came in the fourth quarter when the outcome was no longer in doubt. Quarterback Stetson Bennett (16 of 23 for 284 yards and 2 TDs) and tight end Brock Bowers (five catches for 121 yards and two scores) led the way for the offense in a 48-7 win.

2. Alabama (3-0)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated ULM

The Crimson Tide took some of their frustration out from a sluggish performance at Texas by beating ULM 63-7 on Saturday. The offense averaged 8.6 yards per play behind a strong rushing attack (273 yards), and Alabama’s defense allowed only 169 yards to the Warhawks.

3. Ohio State (3-0)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated Toledo

Not much went wrong for the Buckeyes on Saturday night. Receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba returned to the lineup after missing one game due to injury, helping the offense amass 763 total yards (9.8 per play) in a 77-21 victory over Toledo. Quarterback C.J. Stroud didn’t miss often (22 of 27) and threw for 367 yards and five scores.

4. Michigan (3-0)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated UConn

Total domination. That’s the best way to sum up Michigan’s win over UConn (59-0) to move to 3-0 on the season. The Wolverines have won their first three games by a combined score of 166-17.

5. Clemson (3-0)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated Louisiana Tech

DJ Uiagalelei threw for 221 yards and two touchdowns and guided the offense to an average of seven yards a snap in a 48-20 win over Louisiana Tech. The Tigers have two huge tests upcoming with Wake Forest and NC State up next.

6. USC (3-0)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated Fresno State

The Trojans have scored at least 40 points in each of their first three games after a 45-17 victory over Fresno State on Saturday night. Defense (6.8 yards per play allowed) remains an issue, but USC’s offense won’t be easy to stop this year.

7. Arkansas (3-0)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated Missouri State

The Razorbacks had to work harder than most expected in Bobby Petrino’s return to Fayetteville. Arkansas lost three turnovers and gave up too many big plays in the passing game, but quarterback K.J. Jefferson accounted for 425 yards and two scores), running back Rocket Sanders ran for 167 yards, and Bryce Stephens had a timely punt return for a score to lift the Razorbacks to a 38-27 win.

8. Oklahoma (3-0)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated Nebraska

Nebraska jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, but it was all Sooners the rest of the way. Oklahoma’s offense was rarely stopped by the Cornhuskers thanks to 580 total yards (6.9 per play), with 312 coming on the ground. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel accounted for 285 total yards and led seven scoring drives on the Sooners’ first 10 possessions.

9. Kentucky (3-0)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated Youngstown State

The Wildcats defeated Youngstown State 31-0 to pitch the program’s first shutout since 2009. Quarterback Will Levis threw for 377 yards and two scores, but the offense still has room to improve on the ground (103 yards) and in pass protection (four sacks allowed).

10. Tennessee (3-0)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated Akron

Akron was Tennessee’s final tune-up before SEC play starts next week, and the Volunteers appear to be firing on all cylinders after a 63-6 win. The offense averaged nearly 10 yards a snap (9.7), while the defense limited the Zips to 276 yards and no play went longer than 24 yards.

11. Penn State (3-0)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated Auburn

The Nittany Lions dominated Auburn 41-12 on Saturday. Penn State only outgained the Tigers 477 to 415, but coach James Franklin’s squad forced four turnovers and went five-for-five (compared to two of four for Auburn) in red zone trips. Running back Nick Singleton (124 yards and two scores) continued his breakout freshman campaign.

12. Oklahoma State (3-0)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff

As expected, the Cowboys had no trouble with Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Oklahoma State used 538 yards on offense and scored on four of its first five drives to pull away for an easy 63-7 win.

13. Utah (2-1)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated San Diego State

Kyle Whittingham’s team has rebounded from its opening week loss to Florida with back-to-back dominant performances against Southern Utah and San Diego State. In Saturday’s 35-7 win over the Aztecs, quarterback Cam Rising threw four touchdowns, and the defense allowed only 173 yards (3.1 yards per play).

14. Oregon (2-1)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated BYU

A 46-point loss to Georgia in the season opener skewed just how good Oregon can be in 2022 (and how wide the gap is to the Bulldogs to most of college football right now). The Ducks erased some of the bad feelings from the opener with a convincing 41-20 win over BYU on Saturday. Quarterback Bo Nix accounted for five touchdowns, and the defense held the Cougars to just 366 yards.

15. BYU (2-1)
Week 3 Result:
Lost to Oregon

Following up last week’s physical battle in overtime against Baylor with a road trip to Oregon was a tough assignment for coach Kalani Sitake’s team. Both sides of the ball had their share of issues in the 41-20 loss, as the offense was unable to establish the run (61 yards), and the defense allowed nearly seven yards a play (6.9).

16. Washington (3-0)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated Michigan State

The Huskies are one of college football's most-improved teams under new coach Kalen DeBoer and join the top 25 after a convincing 39-28 win over Michigan State. DeBoer has the offense rolling behind quarterback Michael Penix, who threw for 397 yards and four touchdowns in Saturday's victory.

17. NC State (3-0)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated Texas Tech

A strong defensive effort helped NC State overcome a sluggish performance by its offense (270 yards) to beat Texas Tech 27-14. The Wolfpack returned one of their three picks for a score, sacked the Red Raiders four times and allowed just two third-down conversions.

18. Baylor (2-1)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated Texas State

The Bears were hungry to bounce back after last week’s overtime loss to BYU, and coach Dave Aranda’s team had no trouble with Texas State in a 42-7 win. Baylor churned out 293 rushing yards, and the defense limited the Bobcats to just 3.8 yards per snap.

19. Ole Miss (3-0)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated Georgia Tech

With wins over Troy and Central Arkansas, Ole Miss was largely a mystery going into Week 3. And while Georgia Tech ranks among the worst Power 5 teams in 2022, several aspects of Ole Miss’ 42-0 victory on Saturday was noteworthy. Quarterback Jaxson Dart (10 of 16 for 207 yards) continues to look more comfortable under center, the ground game recorded 316 yards, and the defense limited the Yellow Jackets to 214 yards.

20. Wake Forest (3-0)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated Liberty

The Demon Deacons were favored by double-digits but needed a stop on a two-point play to hold off Liberty in a 37-36 win. Quarterback Sam Hartman threw for 325 yards and three scores to overcome two picks and a lackluster ground game (21 yards). Four forced turnovers by Wake Forest’s defense was also instrumental in the win.

21. Texas (2-1)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated UTSA

No post-Alabama hangover for coach Steve Sarkisian’s team in a 41-20 win over UTSA. Despite quarterback Quinn Ewers sidelined due to injury, the Longhorns held off Roadrunners’ upset bid thanks to 298 rushing yards and a couple of timely stops and plays on defense. Hudson Card was steady (161 passing yards), but running back Bijan Robinson (183 yards and three scores) delivered to move the Longhorns to 2-1.

22. Florida (2-1)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated USF

USF was a 20-plus point underdog but nearly pulled off the upset in the Swamp. Florida’s defense was off balance all night, as the Bulls ran for 286 yards to control the time of possession (36:19). However, coach Billy Napier’s concerns weren’t limited to the defense. Quarterback Anthony Richardson struggled through the air (112 yards on 10 completions) and tossed two costly interceptions. A missed field goal by USF with less than 25 seconds left preserved the win for the Gators.

23. Appalachian State (2-1)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated Troy

With time winding down and just one play left, the Mountaineers appeared to be on their way to a letdown loss versus Troy after last week's win over Texas A&M. But coach Shawn Clark's team delivered one of the best moments of the college football season so far, as quarterback Chase Brice connected on a Hail Mary pass on the final play to win 32-28 over Troy.

24. Florida State (3-0)
Week 3 Result:
Defeated Louisville

Despite losing quarterback Jordan Travis and standout end Jared Verse, the Seminoles found a way to earn a comeback win on the road in Louisville. Florida State is now 3-0 for the first time since 2015.

25. Cincinnati (2-1)
Week 3 Result: Defeated Miami (Ohio)

Thanks to a couple of turnovers and sloppy play early on, the Bearcats trailed Miami (Ohio) 17-7 early in the second quarter. However, coach Luke Fickell's team dominated the rest of the way, limiting the RedHawks to just 183 total yards in a 38-17 win.

The Next Tier: Michigan State, Oregon State, Miami, Texas A&M, Minnesota, Syracuse, Washington State, Kansas, Pitt, LSU, Mississippi State

College Football Top 25 Rankings (After Week 2)

1. Georgia (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Samford

The Bulldogs didn’t need to work hard to move to 2-0 and claim the No. 1 spot in the Athlon Top 25 after Week 2. The offense recorded 478 yards, and the defense limited Samford to only 128 yards in an easy 33-0 victory.

2. Alabama (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Texas

A win is a win, but Alabama was a big favorite and needed a last-minute field goal to escape Austin with the victory over Texas. Quarterback Bryce Young came up big when it mattered, and the defense limited the Longhorns to 5.5 play and made timely stops when needed. The Crimson Tide need better play up front and along the offensive line to win it all in 2022.

3. Ohio State (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Arkansas State

Receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba didn’t play, but the Buckeyes didn’t miss their top target in a 45-12 victory over Arkansas State. Quarterback C.J. Stroud tossed four scores, and receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. continued his breakout season by catching seven passes for 184 yards and three touchdowns.

4. Michigan (2-0)

McCarthy got his chance to make a case for the starting quarterback job by completing 11 of 12 passes for 229 yards and three scores. And after McCarthy's standout performance (combined with a strong fall practice), coach Jim Harbaugh declared the sophomore as the team's starter next week.

5. Clemson (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Furman

The Tigers had a short turnaround after playing on Monday night against Georgia Tech, so it’s not a surprise coach Dabo Swinney’s team looked a little sluggish at times. Furman outgained Clemson 384 to 376, but the Tigers won 35-12 on the scoreboard.

6. USC (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Stanford

Lincoln Riley’s Pac-12 debut was a successful one. Behind the standout play of quarterback Caleb Williams (341 yards), USC recorded 505 yards (eight yards a snap) and had a 41-14 lead in the third quarter before winning 41-28 over Stanford. The defense has work to do, but the Trojans can simply outscore most of the teams on their schedule.

7. Arkansas (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated South Carolina

Quarterback K.J. Jefferson had another standout performance, but the real story of the Razorbacks’ 14-point win over South Carolina was the play in the trenches. Arkansas ran for 295 yards behind Jefferson and running back Rocket Sanders, while the defense allowed only 40 rushing yards and generated six sacks.

8. Oklahoma (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Kent State

The Sooners only led 7-3 at halftime against Kent State, but coach Brent Venables’ squad picked it up over the final 30 minutes to secure a 33-3 victory. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel completed 21 of 28 throws for 296 yards and three scores, and the defense limited the Golden Flashes to four yards a play.

9. BYU (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Baylor

The Cougars vault into the top 10 after winning a physical 26-20 battle against Baylor in overtime. Quarterback Jaren Hall (23 of 39 for 261 yards and a score) was the difference in the game, while BYU's defense limited the Bears to just 2.9 yards per carry.

10. Kentucky (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Florida

Mark Stoops is now the winningest coach in Kentucky school history after Saturday night’s 26-16 victory over Florida. The Wildcats got just enough offense (272 yards) from quarterback Will Levis and a ground game that improved over the contest, while the defense limited the Gators to just 4.3 yards per play, forced two turnovers and returned an interception for a touchdown.

11. Tennessee (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Pitt

The Volunteers got revenge for Pitt’s win in Knoxville last season, overcoming a slow start to win 34-27 in the Steel City. Quarterback Hendon Hooker (325 yards and two scores) and receiver Cedric Tillman (nine catches for 162 yards and a touchdown) came up big for a Tennessee offense that recorded 416 total yards.

12. Florida (1-1)
Week 2 Result:
Lost to Kentucky

A week after scoring arguably the best victory in Week 1, Florida looked like a different team in a loss to Kentucky. Quarterback Anthony Richardson found no running room (four yards) and struggled through the air (14 of 35 for 143 yards). Also, one of his interceptions was returned for a touchdown and another resulted in a six-yard scoring drive for the Wildcats.

13. Utah (1-1)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Southern Utah

The Utes took out their frustration from the Week 1 loss with a 73-7 rout of Southern Utah.

14. Baylor (1-1)

No shame in an overtime loss to BYU, but coach Dave Aranda's team needs more from its passing game (137 yards).

15. NC State (2-0)
Week 2 Result:

16. Oklahoma State (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Arizona State

Spencer Sanders accounted for over 300 yards of total offense and three overall scores to help Oklahoma State put away Arizona State in a 34-17 win. After struggling on defense in the second half of last week's victory over Central Michigan, the Cowboys limited the Sun Devils to 354 yards and just two third-down conversions on 13 attempts.

17. Michigan State (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Akron

The Spartans look ready for next week’s showdown at Washington after an easy 52-0 win over Akron on Saturday.

18. Miami (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Southern Miss

A 14-point third quarter helped Miami pull away for a 30-7 victory against Southern Miss. Quarterback Tyler Van Dyke threw for 241 yards and a score, and the defense pitched a shutout of the Golden Eagles in the second half. After playing Bethune-Cookman and Southern Miss, Miami will have a better idea of where this team stands with a trip to College Station to play Texas A&M on tap in Week 3.

19. Oregon (1-1)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Eastern Washington

Bo Nix’s five touchdown passes and a strong defensive effort (just 187 yards allowed) ensured new Oregon coach Dan Lanning was a winner in his home debut (70-14 over Eastern Washington).

20. Wake Forest (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Vanderbilt

Sam Hartman showed no rust in his return to the lineup by completing 18 of 27 throws for 300 yards and four touchdowns in a 45-25 victory against Vanderbilt.

Defeated Ohio

Freshman running back Nick Singleton recorded 179 rushing yards and two touchdowns to help Penn State cruise to a 46-10 win over Ohio.

22. Texas (1-1)
Week 2 Result:
Lost to Alabama

Let's give the Longhorns some credit in a losing effort and bump coach Steve Sarkisian's team into the top 25. Although Texas fell short against Alabama, Saturday's performance (and near victory) was impressive considering starting quarterback Quinn Ewers was lost in the first quarter due to injury. Let's see if the Longhorns can build from here.

23. Mississippi State (2-0)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Arizona

Quarterback Will Rogers continued his hot start to the season by throwing for 313 yards and four touchdowns to beat Arizona 39-17 in Tucson.

24. Appalachian State (1-1)
Week 2 Result:
Defeated Texas A&M

The Mountaineers join the top 25 after a stunning victory in College Station. 3. Ohio State (1-0)
Week 1 Result: Defeated Notre Dame

The game didn’t go as most expected, but the Buckeyes earned a hard-fought win over Notre Dame (21-10). Instead a high-powered passing game leading the way, Ohio State won with its defense (253 yards allowed and six tackles for a loss) and rushing attack (172 yards).

4. Michigan (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Colorado State

Jim Harbaugh’s team cruised to an easy 51-7 win over Colorado State on Saturday. The Wolverines dominated the line of scrimmage by recording seven sacks and 11 tackles for a loss, while the offense churned out 234 yards on the ground. The quarterback battle will continue into Week 2 with J.J. McCarthy getting the start.

5. Clemson (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Georgia Tech

Different year, same story? There were small signs of progress for Clemson's offense in a 41-10 victory over Georgia Tech but not enough to eliminate most of the concerns about this group. Freshman Cade Klubnik showcased his potential with a late scoring drive, which only adds to the ongoing quarterback intrigue in Death Valley.

6. Notre Dame (0-1)
Week 1 Result:
Lost to Ohio State

The Fighting Irish played Ohio State better than most expected, but coach Marcus Freeman’s team needs more from its passing attack (177 yards) to help an offense that managed only 253 yards on Saturday night.

7. Texas A&M (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Sam Houston

A lengthy weather delay made for challenging conditions to establish any continuity or consistency for coach Jimbo Fisher’s team. However, it’s hard to argue with a 31-0 victory to open ’22. The Aggies need better production on the ground (just 110 yards on 32 carries), however.

8. USC (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Rice

The Trojans averaged 9.3 yards per play and rolled to an easy 66-14 victory over Rice in coach Lincoln Riley’s debut. Although the Owls scored only 14 points, USC’s defense showed vulnerabilities it needs to clean up before facing Stanford in Week 2.

9. Baylor (1-0)

The Billy Napier era in Gainesville is off to a good start after an upset win over Utah. The play of quarterback Anthony Richardson - 274 total yards and three scores - was a big reason for the victory. Also, Florida's defense made two clutch stops in the second half to keep the Utes out of the end zone.

11. Oklahoma (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated UTEP

The Brent Venables era is off to a good start. Oklahoma crushed UTEP 45-13 in Venables’ debut, with both sides of the ball chipping in to the easy victory. Behind quarterback Dillon Gabriel, the Sooners averaged 8.1 yards per play on offense. The defense limited the Miners to 3.8 yards a snap and generated six sacks.

12. Arkansas (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Cincinnati

The Razorbacks pounded Cincinnati’s defense for 224 rushing yards, and quarterback K.J. Jefferson accounted for four total touchdowns in a hard-fought 31-24 victory.

13. Utah (0-1)
Week 1 Result:
Lost to Florida

Two missed scoring opportunities inside of the six-yard line – including an interception in the end zone with less than 20 seconds left – will haunt the Utes in a 29-26 loss at Florida.

14. NC State (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated East Carolina

Sometimes, it’s all about surviving and holding on for a victory. That’s what NC State did in a tough road environment against upset-minded East Carolina on Saturday. The Pirates rallied late but two misses (an extra point and a last-second field goal) went wide to give the Wolfpack a 21-20 win.

15. Oregon (0-1)
Week 1 Result:
Lost to Georgia

Overmatched. That’s the easiest way to sum up the Ducks’ performance in a 49-3 loss to Georgia. Oregon should be among the best teams in the Pac-12 this year, but there’s a wide gap between this team and the top three – Alabama, Georgia and Ohio State – in college football.

16. BYU (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated USF

Dominant. That's the easiest way to sum up BYU's 50-21 victory over USF on Saturday.

17. Michigan State (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Western Michigan

The Spartans used 14 fourth-quarter points to pull away from Western Michigan in a 35-13 victory on Friday night. Quarterback Payton Thorne tossed four touchdowns, and UNLV transfer Jacoby Windmon generated four sacks for the Michigan State defense.

18. Oklahoma State (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Central Michigan

The final score (58-44) was a little deceiving if you didn’t see much of Oklahoma State’s win over Central Michigan. The Cowboys led 51-15 early in the third quarter, but the Chippewas scored 22 points in the final 15 minutes to close the gap on the scoreboard. And as indicated by the final result, Oklahoma State has work to do with its rebuild defense. However, quarterback Spencer Sanders (463 total yards and six overall scores) picked up where he left off from the Fiesta Bowl.

19. Tennessee (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Ball State

As expected, Volunteers cruised to an easy win over Ball State on Thursday night. A bigger test against Pitt awaits in Week 2.

20. Miami (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Bethune-Cookman

The Mario Cristobal era in Coral Gables is off to a good start. The ‘Canes dominated Bethune-Cookman in a 70-13 blowout on Saturday.

21. Wisconsin (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Illinois State

A good sign in Wisconsin’s 38-0 win over Illinois State: Quarterback Graham Mertz connected on 14 of 16 passes for 219 yards and a touchdown.

22. Wake Forest (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated VMI

Mitch Griffis was solid (21 of 29 for 288 yards and three touchdowns) in his first start at quarterback for the Demon Deacons. Wake Forest scored on five of its first six drives in the easy 44-10 win over VMI.

23. Kentucky (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated Miami (Ohio)

Will Levis appeared to be in midseason form in Kentucky’s 37-13 win over Miami (Ohio). The senior completed 21 of 32 passes for 303 yards and three touchdowns and guided the Wildcats to an average of 6.1 yards per play.

24. Cincinnati (0-1)
Week 1 Result:
Lost to Arkansas

The Bearcats battled hard in Fayetteville, but coach Luke Fickell's team struggled to find an answer for quarterback K.J. Jefferson (285 total yards and four scores).

25. Houston (1-0)
Week 1 Result:
Defeated UTSA

Houston’s 37-35 overtime win against UTSA flew under-the-radar thanks to the other high-profile matchups on Saturday. Quarterback Clayton Tune delivered several times in the clutch for the Cougars, including going airborne on a run to reach the endzone on the game-winning score.

College Football Projected Top 25 Rankings for 2022

The 2022 college football season is scheduled to officially begin on Saturday, Aug. 27, but it's never too early to start thinking about top 25 rankings and projecting what might transpire this fall. The list of contenders for the national championship features the usual teams: Alabama, Georgia and Ohio State. And there's a lot of intrigue among those top three, along with a group of teams battling to be No. 4 in preseason predictions.

Alabama is Athlon Sports' projected national champion, with Ohio State at No. 2, followed by Georgia at No. 3. Clemson, Michigan, Utah, USC, Notre Dame, and Texas A&M were all considered for the No. 4 spot, with the Tigers edging the others in a close call. The 2022 season concludes with the national championship on Jan. 9 in SoFi Stadium in the greater Los Angeles area.

The Athlon Sports 2022 preview magazines are scheduled to be available on newsstands nationwide on June 7 and feature in-depth predictions, previews, rankings and insightful stories to prepare for the upcoming year. The SEC and National preview editions can be ordered from Athlon Sports' online store.

An important note on Athlon's top 25 for 2022: This is not a preseason ranking of teams going into the season. Instead, this ranking takes into account where we project teams to finish after the national championship in January. Here are Athlon's projected top 25 teams in college football for 2022.

1. Alabama

Returning Starters: Offense-5, Defense-8
Key Incoming Transfers:
RB Jahmyr Gibbs, WR Tyler Harrell, WR Jermaine Burton, OL Tyler Steen, CB Eli Ricks

The path to a national title once again runs through Tuscaloosa, as Alabama is Athlon's pick to win it all in 2022. Quarterback Bryce Young threw for 4,872 yards and 47 scores last season and returns to defend his Heisman Trophy with a revamped cast of skill players. The additions of Burton (Georgia) and Harrell (Louisville) add much-needed experience and steady wide receivers for Young - the best QB in college football. Gibbs (a transfer from Georgia Tech) should be an all-around weapon at running back for coordinator Bill O'Brien. The offensive line (41 sacks allowed) was the biggest weakness last year and still has question marks with left tackle Evan Neal off to the NFL. The addition of Vanderbilt transfer Tyler Steen should help at tackle, and the pieces are in place for a solid interior. New position coach Eric Wolford also is a reason to believe this group will stabilize in '22. The outlook on Alabama's defense is similar to the offense: Loaded. Will Anderson Jr. (33.5 TFL) returns to dominate the line of scrimmage with running mates Dallas Turner (8.5 sacks) and Henry To'o-To'o joining him at linebacker. Phidarian Mathis must be replaced up front, but the line is still in good shape, especially with Byron Young, DJ Dale and Tim Smith returning. Former LSU starter Ricks joins a loaded secondary already featuring safeties Jordan Battle and DeMarcco Hellams and cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry.
Key Games: at Texas, at Arkansas, Texas A&M, at Tennessee, at LSU, at Ole Miss, Auburn

2. Ohio State

Returning Starters: Offense-6, Defense-6
Key Incoming Transfers:
LB DeaMonte Trayanum, DB Tanner McCalister, K Parker Lewis

Ohio State won 11 games and claimed a Rose Bowl victory over Utah last season, but after losing to Michigan and struggling again on defense last year, coach Ryan Day wasted no time making changes. Jim Knowles was hired from Oklahoma State to coordinate the defense, bringing a veteran play-caller to Columbus in an effort to improve a unit that surrendered 5.3 yards per play and 22.8 points a game. Stopping the run (126.8 yards a game allowed) was a concern, and the Buckeyes need to jumpstart a pass rush that generated 24 sacks in conference games last fall. Although Knowles has work to do, the depth chart doesn't lack for talent. Up front, Zach Harrison, Jack Sawyer and J.T. Tuimoloau return, with converted running back Steele Chambers and Tommy Eichenberg anchoring the linebacker unit. The secondary could be the most-improved group in the Big Ten next fall, as cornerback Denzel Burke and safety Ronnie Hickman are entrenched, while McCalister (Oklahoma State transfer) is an impact addition at safety. Even with receivers Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson off to the NFL, the offense won't miss a beat (7.96 yards per play last year). Quarterback C.J. Stroud threw for 4,435 yards and 44 touchdowns in his first year as the starter and could be the favorite to win the Heisman in '22. Running back TreVeyon Henderson is a rising star, and the offensive line should rank among the best in the nation. Jaxon Smith-Njigba (95 catches in '21) is back at receiver, with Marvin Harrison Jr., Julian Fleming and Emeka Egbuka ready to emerge as breakout options.
Key Games: Notre Dame, Wisconsin, at Michigan State, Iowa, at Penn State, Michigan

3. Georgia

Returning Starters: Offense-7, Defense-3
Key Incoming Transfers:
None

Several key players from Georgia's national championship team are gone - an NFL Draft-record 15 picks to be exact - but coach Kirby Smart's program will reload and push for a spot in the playoff once again. A dominant defense led the way for the Bulldogs in '21, holding teams to 4.2 yards per play and 10.2 points a contest. But this unit was hit the hardest by departures, leaving lineman Jalen Carter, linebackers Robert Beal and Nolan Smith, along with defensive backs Christopher Smith and Kelee Ringo as the next wave of stars. Although there's major turnover on this group, Georgia should still rank among the SEC's best on defense. And even if the defense takes a small step back, the Bulldogs don't lack for firepower on the other side of the ball. Under coordinator Todd Monken's watch, Georgia led the SEC in scoring offense (37.8 points a game) in conference-only matchups last year. Quarterback Stetson Bennett returns, with a talented group of playmakers on the outside, including tight ends Brock Bowers, Darnell Washington and Arik Gilbert, along with receivers Kearis Jackson and Adonai Mitchell. Kenny McIntosh and Kendall Milton headline the backfield, running behind an offensive line poised to be among the best in the nation. Helping Georgia's case for another playoff trip is a favorable schedule that should it favored in all 12 regular-season matchups.

Key Games: vs. Oregon (Atlanta), at South Carolina, Auburn, vs. Florida (Jacksonville), Tennessee, at Mississippi State, at Kentucky

4. Clemson

Returning Starters: Offense-8, Defense-8
Key Incoming Transfers: QB Hunter Johnson

The Tigers won double-digit games for the 11th consecutive year in 2021 but failed to make the CFB Playoff for the first time since '14. Was last season a one-year blip or a sign of a small slip from the top of college football? Although question marks remain, coach Dabo Swinney's team should be able to lean on its defense to return to the top of the ACC. This unit smothered opponents last fall, holding offenses to 4.4 yards per play and 14.8 points a game. Linebacker James Skalski and cornerbacks Andrew Booth and Mario Goodrich need to be replaced, but the line returns standouts Myles Murphy, Xavier Thomas, Tyler Davis and Bryan Bresee and linebacker Trenton Simpson is a rising star. New coordinator Wes Goodwin has big shoes to fill in replacing Brent Venables in his first on-field role. However, his first audition in the bowl against Iowa State went well, and there's no shortage of talent in place. Few questions surround the defense, but the story is different on the other side of the ball. New coordinator Brandon Streeter has to get quarterback DJ Uiagalelei (9 TDs, 10 INTs) back on track or turn to touted freshman Cade Klubnik to jumpstart an offense that averaged only 24.5 points a game in ACC contests last year. Four starters are back up front but improvement is needed. The Tigers also need more consistency and big plays at receiver. The strength of the offense rests at running back with Will Shipley and Kobe Pace leading the way. Clemson's defense is good enough to win the ACC title again. However, in order to return to the playoff, the offense has to improve.
Key Games: at Wake Forest, NC State, at Boston College, at Florida State, at Notre Dame, Miami, at South Carolina

5. Texas A&M

Returning Starters: Offense-4, Defense-5
Key Incoming Transfers:
QB Max Johnson

Can the Aggies take the next step and play their way into the CFB Playoff in 2022? Under coach Jimbo Fisher, Texas A&M is assembling the roster to do so, which was bolstered by the No. 1 recruiting haul this cycle. Although the Aggies beat Alabama in '21, getting past the Crimson Tide again will require some answers to emerge on both sides of the ball. Although Johnson, Haynes King and touted freshman Conner Weigman are all capable, the quarterback battle between this trio will continue into the fall. Also, the Aggies need to hit on more big plays in the passing game after connecting on just 11 completions of 40-plus yards over the last two years. True freshman Evan Stewart will help right away on the outside, teaming with Ainias Smith to give the offense two standout playmakers. Running back Isaiah Spiller is off to the NFL, but Devon Achane is the next backfield star. Three starters return up front, but guard Kenyon Green will be missed. Texas A&M's defense held teams to 15.9 points a game and 4.7 yards per play last fall. Coordinator Mike Elko left to be the head coach at Duke, but Fisher hired DJ Durkin away from Ole Miss to call plays in '22. This unit lost a handful of key players up front and safety Leon O'Neal also departed. The elite recruiting haul should quickly restock the trenches, and even with O'Neal gone, the secondary - led by Antonio Johnson and Demani Richardson - is poised to rank as one of the best in college football.
Key Games: Miami, vs. Arkansas (Arlington, Texas), at Mississippi State, at Alabama, at South Carolina, Florida, at Auburn, LSU

6. Michigan

Returning Starters: Offense-7, Defense-3
Key Incoming Transfers:
C Victor Oluwatimi, DL Cam Goode

Coming off a breakthrough year that resulted in a win over Ohio State, the program's first Big Ten title since 2004, and a trip to the CFB Playoff, Michigan has a few major question marks to address - but also plenty of returning pieces to suggest another run at the top four is within reach. The personnel turnover is greater on defense with the departure of ends Aidan Hutchinson and David Ojabo, linebacker Josh Ross and defensive backs Dax Hill, Brad Hawkins and Vincent Gray. Also, coordinator Mike Macdonald returned to the NFL, prompting coach Jim Harbaugh to hire Jesse Minter - also a former Baltimore assistant similar to Macdonald - as the team's new signal-caller. With the defense under renovation, Michigan's offense is the strength of the '22 squad. However, there is a big change on the staff, as Josh Gattis left for Miami, with Matt Weiss and Sherrone Moore taking over the play-calling and co-coordinator duties. J.J. McCarthy and Cade McNamara give the offense two very capable quarterbacks, and Donovan Edwards and Blake Corum should rank among the nation's best running back duos. The Wolverines have plenty of capable receivers, including Ronnie Bell returning from injury, Cornelius Johnson, Andrel Anthony, Roman Wilson and tight end Erick All. Two starters depart a standout offensive line, but the arrival of Oluwatimi (from Virginia) at center should ensure the drop-off is minimal. The Big Ten East is likely to be decided in The Game versus Ohio State. However, even if Michigan falls short in that matchup, 11-1 might be good enough for this team to make the playoff again.
Key Games: at Iowa, Penn State, Michigan State, Nebraska, at Ohio State

7. Notre Dame

Returning Starters: Offense-7, Defense-7
Key Incoming Transfers:
DL Chris Smith, S Brandon Joseph, K Blake Grupe

Marcus Freeman steps into one of the best situations for any first-year coach, as the Fighting Irish bring back 14 starters and have won double-digit games in each of the last five seasons. Under Freeman's watch as defensive coordinator last year, Notre Dame limited opponents to 19.7 points a game and 5.3 yards per play. This unit is the strength of the '22 Fighting Irish, led by end Isaiah Foskey (12.5 TFL) and Jayson Ademilola (seven TFL) in the up front and a steady group of linebackers in the middle. Safety Kyle Hamilton won't be easy to replace, but Joseph, a transfer from Northwestern, can be an All-America performer. If there's a concern on the defense, it's the cornerback spot. Whether or not Notre Dame can make a run at the CFB Playoff again is likely to hinge on the development of promising sophomore quarterback Tyler Buchner. The California native ran for 336 yards and three scores and threw for 298 yards and three touchdowns in 10 appearances last year. Kyren Williams is gone at running back, but Logan Diggs and Chris Tyree are a more-than-capable duo in the backfield - especially with four starters returning in the trenches. Tight end Michael Mayer - a potential preseason All-American - headlines the list of weapons for Buchner. Depth at receiver is a concern, especially with Kevin Austin off to the NFL and Avery Davis coming off an injury.
Key Games: at Ohio State, at North Carolina, vs. BYU (Las Vegas), Clemson, at USC

8. Utah

Returning Starters: Offense-8, Defense-5
Key Incoming Transfers:
WR Landon Morris, TE Logan Kendall, LB Gabe Reid, LB Mohamoud Diabate, S Clayton Isbell

Everything is in place for Utah to make a run at a playoff spot in '22. Coach Kyle Whittingham's team has won three out of the last four Pac-12 South titles and crushed Oregon in the conference title game last year. The Utes got off to a slow start (1-2) in '21, but the emergence of quarterback Cameron Rising (2,493 yards and 20 TDs) helped the offense get on track and lead the Pac-12 in yards per play (6.6 in conference-only games). Rising returns as one of the Pac-12's top signal-callers, with Tavion Thomas (1,108 yards and 21 TDs) back among the nation's top running backs in '22. Tight ends Dalton Kincaid and Brant Kuithe are the go-to targets in the passing game, while the Utes need more out of their returning receivers with Britain Covey off to the NFL. Left tackle Bam Olaseni and center Nick Ford leave big shoes to fill in the trenches. On the other side of the ball, although linebacker Devin Lloyd and end Mika Tafua will be missed, it's hard to worry too much about the Sack Lake City defense. Utah allowed the fewest points (19.2) and tied in yards per play (5.03) in conference-only matchups last fall. The next wave of stars features cornerback Clark Phillips III, safety Cole Bishop, end Van Fillinger and linebacker Karene Reid. With USC visiting Salt Lake City this fall, the path to a spot in the Pac-12 title game runs through Utah once again.
Key Games: at Florida, San Diego State, at UCLA, USC, at Washington State, at Oregon

9. USC

Returning Starters: Offense-6, Defense-3
Key Incoming Transfers: QB Caleb Williams, RB Travis Dye, RB Austin Jones, WR Mario Williams, WR Jordan Addison, WR Brenden Rice, WR Terrell Bynum, OL Bobby Haskins, DL Solomon Byrd, DL Tyrone Taleni, DL Sinjun Astani, DL Earl Barquet, LB Eric Gentry, LB Shane Lee, LB Romello Height, CB Latrell McCutchin, CB Mekhi Blackmon, CB Jacobe Covington, S Bryson Shaw

The Trojans might be college football's biggest wild-card team in 2022. The hire of Lincoln Riley was a massive home run for the program, and the staff tapped into the portal for help at every position. If all of the pieces fall into place, a run at the CFB Playoff is a possibility. However, meshing a new staff with several transfers on both sides of the ball is no easy task. Williams (2,347 total yards and 27 TDs) followed Riley from Oklahoma to the West Coast, giving the Trojans one of the top signal-callers in the nation. Upgrades at running back (Dye and Jones) came via the portal, and the receiving corps ranks among the best in the nation with Addison (the '21 Biletnikoff Award winner, Pitt transfer) joining three other additions - Rice, Bynum and Mario Williams. Riley has work to do to improve the line, but USC has four starters back - including standout guard Andrew Vorhees - off a unit that allowed 18 sacks last fall. Scoring points shouldn't be a problem for the Trojans. However, a run at the Pac-12 title is likely to hinge on how fast this defense develops. USC surrendered 34.2 points a game and 6.6 yards per play in Pac-12 games and ranked 11th in the conference in pass efficiency defense. This unit gave up too many big plays, struggled to generate pressure and forced only 19 takeaways. Question marks remain about this unit after spring practice, but Riley's work in the portal has added help at every level. Also, an upgraded coaching staff should bring some improvement to this group in '22.
Key Games: at Stanford, Fresno State, at Oregon State, at Utah, at UCLA, Notre Dame

10. Oregon

Returning Starters: Offense-7, Defense-7
Key Incoming Transfers: QB Bo Nix, RB Mar'Keise Irving, WR Chase Cota, WR Caleb Chapman, DL Jordon Riley, DL Sam Taimani, DL Casey Rogers, CB Christian Gonzalez, K Andrew Boyle, P Adam Barry

Dan Lanning inherits one of the best situations of any first-year coach in 2022. The Ducks are a heavy favorite in the North, and 14 returning starters provides a strong foundation on both sides of the ball. Nix (transfer from Auburn) should give the team an upgrade under center. The line should be the best in the Pac-12 with five returning starters, and despite some turnover at the skill spots, Oregon doesn't lack for talent with Sean Dollars and Byron Cardwell at running back, along with Kris Hutson, Troy Franklin and Dont'e Thornton an emerging trio on the outside (along with a couple of transfer additions at both spots). The defense (Lanning's specialty) struggled last year by allowing 27.2 points a game in Pac-12 matchups and surrendering on average 211.3 rushing yards in the team's four losses. Additionally, the Ducks must replace standout edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux from a unit that generated only 23 sacks last fall. The strength of this group rests at linebacker with Noah Sewell (an expected preseason All-American) and Justin Flowe. Lanning also needs to retool a secondary that finished fifth in the Pac-12 in pass efficiency defense last fall.
Key Games: vs. Georgia (Atlanta), BYU, UCLA, at California, Washington, Utah, at Oregon State

11. Baylor

Returning Starters: Offense-6, Defense-7
Key Incoming Transfers: DL Jaxon Player, LB Josh White

The Big 12 might be the toughest conference to predict at the top. Baylor - the defending Big 12 champ - is Athlon's pick to repeat. However, there are plenty of threats in the conference, including Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and potentially a wild-card team or two like Kansas State, Texas and West Virginia. Similar to last season, the strength of coach Dave Aranda's team is its defense. The Bears held teams to 5.2 yards per play and 18.3 points a game and ranked second in the Big 12 in rush defense and pass efficiency defense. A strong front anchored by nose tackle Siaki Ika and Player, a transfer from Tulsa, ranks among the best in college football, but linebacker Terrel Bernard is a big loss. Aranda has to patch a couple of holes in the secondary after the departure of safety Jalen Pitre and fellow defensive backs Kalon Barnes, Raleigh Texada and JT Woods. The arrival of Jeff Grimes as play-caller sparked a much-improved offense last fall. The Bears averaged 6.3 yards per play (up from 4.4 the previous year) and finished third in the Big 12 in scoring offense (31.6 a game). Led by left tackle Connor Galvin, Baylor returns one of the top offensive lines in college football. Blake Shapen impressed late in the '21 season and edged Gerry Bohanon (who has since transferred to USF) for the starting QB job exiting spring practice. The biggest concerns for Grimes are at the skill spots. Abram Smith (1,601 yards) departed at running back, and the team lost its top three statistical receivers from last season. The return of Gavin Holmes after a season-ending injury helps on the outside, while Taye McWilliams (10.7 per carry last year) is a breakout candidate at running back. Good fortune (plus-12 turnover margin and four wins by one score) was also on Baylor's side last year, but this team is good enough to overcome some regression in both areas.
Key Games: at BYU, at Iowa State, Oklahoma State, at West Virginia, at Oklahoma, Kansas State, TCU, at Texas

12. NC State

Returning Starters: Offense-7, Defense-10
Key Incoming Transfers: QB Jack Chambers, WR Darryl Jones, P Shane McDonough

Everything is in place for NC State to push for 10 or more wins for the second time in program history and claim the ACC title in 2022. The Wolfpack return 17 starters - the most of any team in the ACC - headlined by quarterback Devin Leary. The New Jersey native threw for 3,433 yards and 35 touchdowns last season and ranked second in the league (conference-only games) with a 65.6 percent completion rate. Thayer Thomas (51 catches), Devin Carter (31) and Porter Rooks (23) are back on the outside, but leading receiver Emeka Emezie (60) and the team's top two rushers (Zonovan Knight and Ricky Person) have departed. The Wolfpack must replace standout left tackle Ikem Ekwonu, but four other starters are back, and the line gained a late boost in the spring with Chandler Zavala was awarded an extra year. NC State's defense quietly ranked second in the ACC in fewest points allowed (19.7 a game) and yards per play (4.94) last fall. With 10 starters back, this unit could be even better in '22. The strength of coordinator Tony Gibson's defense rests at linebacker with the return of Payton Wilson, Isaiah Moore and Drake Thomas. Tackle Cory Durden is a force in the trenches, and the secondary is stocked with talent, including safety Tanner Ingle, cornerback Shyheim Battle and nickel Tyler Baker-Williams. If coach Dave Doeren and his staff get enough production from the ground game, plug the gap at left tackle and maintain last year's production on both sides of the ball, the ACC title could be coming back to Raleigh.
Key Games: at Clemson, Florida State, Wake Forest, at Louisville, at North Carolina

13. Oklahoma

Returning Starters: Offense-5, Defense-4
Key Incoming Transfers:
QB Dillon Gabriel, QB Davis Beville, WR LV Bunkley-Shelton, WR Javian Hester, TE Daniel Parker, OL Tyler Guyton, OL McKade Mettauer, DL Jeffery Johnson, DL Jonah Laulu, LB T.D. Roof, CB Kani Walker, CB CJ Coldon, S Trey Morrison

It's been an offseason of massive change in Norman, but the Sooners still have enough to win the Big 12 title in '22. New coach Brent Venables hired a top-notch staff, including offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby, who landed his former pupil at UCF in Gabriel to guide the attack this season. Gabriel's supporting cast is a work in progress, however. The Sooners need more consistency from their running backs, and even though Eric Gray returns, true freshman Jovantae Barnes could win the starting nod. Marvin Mims (32 catches for 705 yards) and a healthy Theo Wease are a good starting point in the receiving corps, but more depth needs to emerge. The offensive line has been an annual strength under assistant Bill Bedenbaugh, but this unit took a step back last year, and even with three starters back, question marks remain for '22. Venables' arrival should immediately help a defense that allowed 5.7 yards per play and 25.8 points a game last fall. However, there are personnel voids to fill at every level. Isaiah Thomas, Perrion Winfrey, Nik Bonitto and Brian Asamoah top the list of losses up front, while Delarrin Turner-Yell and Patrick Fields depart the secondary. A major influx of transfers is likely to immediately bolster both sides of the ball. How fast the Sooners mesh the new arrivals with the staff and scheme changes will determine whether or not this team can win the Big 12 in Year 1 under Venables.
Key Games: at Nebraska, Kansas State, Texas, Baylor, at West Virginia, Oklahoma State

14. Michigan State

Returning Starters: Offense-5, Defense-8
Key Incoming Transfers:
RB Jalen Berger, RB Jarek Broussard, TE Daniel Barker, OL Brian Greene, DL Khris Bogle, LB Aaron Brule, LB Jacoby Windmon, CB Ameer Speed

Behind a huge season from running back Kenneth Walker III, Michigan State improved from 2-5 in '20 to 11-2 in coach Mel Tucker's second year in East Lansing. Walker is off to the NFL, but quarterback Payton Thorne returns to headline the offense. Thorne threw for 3,233 yards and 27 touchdowns last season, and while Jalen Nailor also is gone, his favorite target (Jayden Reed) is back. The Spartans need to identify a couple more playmakers around Reed and are counting on a couple of transfers (Berger and Broussard) to help power the ground game. Retooling a line returning only two starters is a must. With eight starters back and another offseason to learn under coordinator Scottie Hazelton, the hope is Michigan State can show big-time progress on defense. This unit gave up too many big plays against the pass last year, ranked 11th in the Big Ten in pass efficiency defense and gave up 30.8 points in matchups to teams with a winning record. Tucker hit the portal hard for help, bringing in four contributors who should help right away. Lineman Jacob Slade and safety Xavier Henderson are two stalwarts for a unit that appears to be deeper (and likely better) than it was in '21.
Key Games: at Washington, Minnesota, Ohio State, Wisconsin, at Michigan, at Penn State

15. Cincinnati

Returning Starters: Offense-7, Defense-4
Key Incoming Transfers:
QB Ben Bryant, RB Corey Kiner, WR Nick Mardner, OL Dartanyan Tinsley, DL Noah Potter, LB Ivan Pace Jr., K Ryan Coe

Despite significant losses on both sides of the ball, winning double-digit games for the fourth time in five years is within reach for the Bearcats. Desmond Ridder is in the NFL, but the quarterback situation is in good hands with either Ben Bryant or Evan Prater. Jerome Ford will be missed at running back too. However, Kiner (LSU transfer, 4.1 ypc last year) headlines the next wave of capable options in the backfield. Josh Whyle and Leonard Taylor form one of the top tight end duos in college football, while Tyler Scott (30 catches) and Tre Tucker (34) are back to alleviate the loss of Alec Pierce at receiver. All five starters are back up front to give Cincinnati the top offensive line in the AAC. New standouts are needed on a defense that led the way for a trip to the CFB Playoff by holding teams to 4.7 yards per play and 16.9 points a game last season. Myjai Sanders and Curtis Brooks are gone up front, Darrian Beavers and Joel Dublanko depart at linebacker, and three key starters in the secondary are gone, including standout cornerbacks Ahmad Gardner and Coby Bryant. However, don't expect a drastic drop in production. Coach Luke Fickell will find the right answers here, and the depth chart isn't lacking talent. Up front, Potter (Ohio State transfer), Jowon Briggs and Malik Vann will be another standout line, with Ty Van Fossen and Deshawn Pace leading the way at linebacker. Ja'von Hicks (safety) and Arquon Bush (cornerback) headline the next wave of stars in the secondary.

16. Wake Forest

Returning Starters: Offense-9, Defense-6
Key Incoming Transfers: TE Jaeger Bull, DL Kobie Turner, LB Eldrick Robinson II, S Brendon Harris

The path to an ACC Atlantic Division title for the second year in a row starts on offense for coach Dave Clawson's team. Quarterback Sam Hartman (4,591 overall yards and 50 total TDs) is back, and while Jaquarii Roberson (71 catches in '21) is gone, the receiving corps is still loaded thanks to the return of A.T. Perry (71 grabs last year), Taylor Morin (43) and Donavon Greene (back from injury). Leading rusher Christian Beal-Smith (732 yards) transferred to South Carolina, leaving Justice Ellison (541 yards) and Christian Turner (506) to handle the bulk of the work at running back. Up front, Zach Tom leaves big shoes to fill, but the Demon Deacons should rank among the ACC's best in the trenches. Few question marks exist about Wake Forest's offense, but the same can't be said on defense. Brad Lambert is a standout defensive coordinator hire and inherits a group led by lineman Rondell Bothroyd (16.5 TFL last year) and defensive backs Gavin Holmes, Nick Andersen and Caelen Carson. However, concerns remain at linebacker, and the Demon Deacons gave up 5.9 yards per play and 28.9 points a game last fall. The rush defense also ranked near the bottom of the ACC.

17. Oklahoma State

Returning Starters: Offense-7, Defense-5
Key Incoming Transfers:
RB Deondre Jackson, OL Jason Brooks, OL Casey Collier, DL Solomon Wright

The Cowboys came inches away from a Big 12 title last season, but coach Mike Gundy's team has question marks to address in order to get to the top of the conference this fall. In a reversal of most of Gundy's teams, defense led the way in '21. Last year's group was No. 1 in the Big 12 in rush defense, pass efficiency defense, fewest points allowed and yards per play (just 4.58 allowed). However, several standouts - including linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez, cornerback Jarrick Bernard-Converse, safety Kolby Harvell-Peel and defensive tackle Israel Antwine - have departed. Also, coordinator Jim Knowles left for Ohio State, but Gundy was able to lure former Vanderbilt head coach and Stanford and Auburn defensive play-caller Derek Mason to Stillwater. Anchored by Brock Martin and Collin Oliver, a line that led the way with 56 sacks in '21, is the unquestioned strength of this defense. Offensively, Oklahoma State averaged 5.46 yards per play last season, which was the lowest mark for the program since '14. Quarterback Spencer Sanders earned first-team All-Big 12 honors in '21 after throwing for 2,831 yards and 20 touchdowns and running for 664 yards and six scores. The senior needs to play with more consistency, especially with the losses on the other side of the ball. A by-committee approach could take shape at running back with Jaylen Warren departing, and while top receiver Tay Martin (80 catches for 1,046 yards) also is gone, the cupboard isn't bare with Brennan Presley, Blaine Green and Braydon Johnson in place. The Cowboys have experience returning up front, but guard Josh Sills and center Danny Godlevske will be missed. After having good fortune in close games (6-2) in '21, Gundy needs better play from Sanders and a quick reload on defense to replicate last year's win total.

18. Tennessee

Returning Starters: Offense-8, Defense-6
Key Incoming Transfers:
WR Bru McCoy, OL Gerald Mincey, CB Andre Turrentine, DB Wesley Walker

Josh Heupel brought significant improvement and a high-powered offense to Rocky Top last fall. The Volunteers finished second in the SEC in scoring offense (39.3 points a game - up from 21.5 the previous year) and averaged 6.5 yards a snap (up from 5.3). Also, Tennessee led the SEC in plays of 40-plus yards (23) after connecting on just three in '20. Quarterback Hendon Hooker (31 TDs to 3 INTs) is back to direct the offense, with Cedric Tillman (64 catches for 1,081 yards) the main target. Velus Jones Jr. and JaVonta Payton have departed the receiving corps, so it's up to Jalin Hyatt and McCoy (USC transfer) to pick up the slack on the outside. Leading rusher Jabari Small (792 yards) returns, as do four starters - including left tackle Darnell Wright - along the offensive line. Although scoring points isn't a problem, Tennessee still has work to do on defense. Last year, the Volunteers surrendered 33.6 points a contest and 5.7 yards per play in SEC games. This group also struggled versus the run in conference action (200.8 yards per game allowed) and ranked near the bottom of the league in third-down and red-zone defense. Linemen Tyler Baron and Byron Young and linebacker Jeremy Banks are back as top contributors, but defensive backs Theo Jackson and Alontae Taylor will be missed.

19. Wisconsin

Returning Starters: Offense-5, Defense-3
Key Incoming Transfers:
WR Keontez Lewis, CB Justin Clark, CB Jay Shaw, CB Cedrick Dort, S Kamo'i Latu

The Badgers return the fewest starters (eight) in the Big Ten, but it's hard to pick against coach Paul Chryst's squad as the favorite in the West Division. However, Wisconsin has major question marks to address, including a defense that held teams to 16.2 points a game and 4.1 per play last season. Nick Herbig (nine sacks) anchors a linebacker group losing running mates Jack Sanborn, Noah Burks and Leo Chenal. Also, all four starters are gone in the secondary, which prompted a couple of key additions through the portal. It's safe to assume coordinator Jim Leonhard will find the right answers here, which leaves the greater concerns on offense. The Badgers averaged just 5.6 yards per play, struggled to generate big plays (only eight of 40-plus yards) and lacked consistency in the passing game. Can quarterback Graham Mertz take his performance up a notch? In matchups against teams with a winning record the last two years, he's tossed 13 picks to just five interceptions. The junior also needs playmakers to emerge at receiver with Danny Davis III and Kendric Pryor, along with tight end Jake Ferguson, all out of eligibility. Chimere Dike (19 catches) is a player to watch on the outside. It's no secret Wisconsin's offense runs through Braelon Allen, who posted 1,268 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns as a true freshman last fall. The Wisconsin native should push for first-team All-America honors this year, especially with the makings of one of the Big Ten's top lines in place.

20. Miami

Returning Starters: Offense-7, Defense-5
Key Incoming Transfers: RB Henry Parrish, WR Frank Ladson, OL Jonathan Denis, OL Logan Sagapolu, DL Darrell Jackson, DL Akheem Mesidor, DL Antonio Moultrie, DL/LB Mitchell Agude, DL Jacob Lichtenstein, LB Caleb Johnson, CB Daryl Porter

It's a new era of Miami football with Mario Cristobal returning home. And Cristobal's arrival isn't the only good thing happening for the 'Canes, as facility improvements are coming and a top-notch staff with plenty of resources is already in place. Also, the cupboard isn't bare going into '22. Miami won five out of its last six games, led by rising star quarterback Tyler Van Dyke (25 TDs to 6 INTs). Van Dyke needs a few receivers to emerge after Charleston Rambo and Mike Harley departed, but the ground game should be strong with Jaylan Knighton and Parrish, a transfer from Ole Miss, leading the way. Three starters return up front, including first-team All-ACC candidates in Zion Nelson and DJ Scaife. New defensive signal-caller Kevin Steele has a bigger challenge on his hands, however. Miami struggled with missed tackles, allowed 28.4 points a game and ranked last in the ACC in red zone defense. A handful of transfers (along with the coaching change) should bring some improvement to this defense. Also, this unit features promising players up front (Leonard Taylor) and in the secondary (cornerback Tyrique Stevenson and safety James Williams). The 'Canes also need to do a better job in the turnover department (minus-six in '21).
Key Games: at Texas A&M, at Virginia Tech, Florida State, at Clemson, Pitt

21. Kentucky

Returning Starters: Offense-5, Defense-5
Key Incoming Transfers: WR Javon Baker, WR Tayvion Robinson, OL Tashawn Manning, DL Darrion Henry-Young, DB Zion Childress, DB Keidron Smith, DB Jordan Robinson

Mark Stoops has raised the bar for success in Lexington. The Wildcats have won 10 games in two out of the last four years, and Stoops needs just two victories to pass Bear Bryant as the winningest coach in school history. Despite some key losses on both sides of the ball, optimism runs high thanks to the return of quarterback Will Levis and a deep backfield anchored by Chris Rodriguez Jr. Levis accounted for 33 overall scores and threw for 2,812 yards last season. However, he's working under a new play-caller (Rich Scangarello) after Liam Coen departed for the NFL. Coen helped the Wildcats average 32.3 points a game last fall - a significant increase from 23.8 the previous year - so Scangarello has big shoes to fill. Restocking a line that lost three standouts - left tackle Dare Rosenthal, center Luke Fortner and right tackle Darian Kinnard - and replacing go-to receiver Wan'Dale Robinson (104 catches) won't be easy. Kentucky's defense has finished among the top five in the SEC in scoring defense in each of the last four years. Although this group yielded yardage (5.99 yards per play in SEC games), it surrendered only 21.7 points a contest. J.J. Weaver (six sacks) and DeAndre Square (80 tackles) anchor a strong linebacker unit, but the defensive line and secondary must be restocked.
Key Games: at Florida, at Ole Miss, at Tennessee, Georgia, Louisville

22. Arkansas

Returning Starters: Offense-5, Defense-4
Key Incoming Transfers: WR Jadon Haselwood, DL Jordan Domineck, DL Landon Jackson, LB Drew Sanders, DB Dwight McGlothern, DB Latavious Brini

Can Arkansas exceed expectations for the third season in a row under coach Sam Pittman? A brutal schedule and just nine returning starters are some of the obstacles to overcome, but the Razorbacks are positioned for a run at their first winning record in SEC play since 2015. Quarterback KJ Jefferson averaged 256.9 total yards a game last year in his first as the team's starter. Jefferson paced the offense in rushing (664 yards), but coordinator Kendal Briles could alleviate some of the workload on his shoulders thanks to a talented trio of backs - Rocket Sanders, AJ Green and Dominique Johnson - in place. Four starters are back to form one of the top lines in the SEC. Replacing receiver Treylon Burks (66 catches for 1,104 yards and 11 TDs) is the biggest concern on offense. Warren Thompson, Haselwood (Oklahoma transfer), Ketron Jackson and tight end (and converted receiver) Trey Knox will have to pick up the slack on the outside. Defensive coordinator Barry Odom has work to do on a unit that allowed 6.1 yards per play and 29.6 points a game last season. The Razorbacks lost key cogs at every level, but return linebacker Bumper Pool and safety Jalen Catalon is back after missing seven games due to injury. Key portal additions in Sanders (Alabama) and McGlothern (LSU) should be impact newcomers.

23. Pitt

Returning Starters: Offense-7, Defense-7
Key Incoming Transfers: QB Kedon Slovis, WR Konata Mumpfield, WR Jerrod Means, LB Shayne Simon

Make no mistake: The Panthers are going to miss receiver Jordan Addison (transferred to USC). And replacing Kenny Pickett at quarterback is not going to be easy for coach Pat Narduzzi. However, the cupboard isn't empty in the Steel City for another run at the ACC Coastal title. Slovis, a transfer for USC, is locked into a tight battle with Nick Patti to replace Picket, and the winner of this competition has a handful of proven running backs to lean on and all five starters back up front. Addison's ability and production isn't going to be easy to replace. Mumpfield (an Akron transfer) should help right away, and Jared Wayne returns after grabbing 47 receptions last fall. Tight end Gavin Bartholomew is also a rising star. The Panthers can also lean heavily on a defense returning seven starters after holding teams to 5.06 yards per play in '21. Calijah Kancey (13 TFL last year) anchors one of the best defensive lines in college football, and he's supported by ends Habakkuk Baldonado (nine sacks), John Morgan III and Deslin Alexandre. Standout SirVocea Dennis is back at linebacker, and although cornerback Damarri Mathis is gone, three other starters return in the secondary.
Key Games: West Virginia, Tennessee, at Louisville, at North Carolina, Virginia Tech, at Virginia, at Miami

24. Houston

Returning Starters: Offense-6, Defense-6
Key Incoming Transfers: QB Lucas Coley, RB Brandon Campbell, WR Cody Jackson, WR Joseph Manjack, WR Samuel Brown, OL Tyler Johnson, OL Lance Robinson, LB Jamal Morris

The Cougars took a significant step forward last year, finishing 12-2 with a trip to the AAC title game after a 7-13 start (2019-20) to coach Dana Holgorsen's tenure. Both sides of the ball enter '22 in good shape, which should allow Houston to push Cincinnati for the top spot in the conference. A high-powered offense (6.2 yards per play AAC games) returns quarterback Clayton Tune (3,546 yards and 30 TDs) and receiver Nathaniel Dell (90 catches), while Ta'Zhawn Henry and Campbell (USC transfer) will handle the backfield duties after starter (and '21 leading rusher) Alton McCaskill suffered a torn ACL this spring. Holgorsen bolstered Tune's weapons through the transfer portal, while incoming freshman Matthew Golden is poised to be an impact addition. A line that allowed 38 sacks last season must be retooled with just two returning starters. Although scoring points wasn't a problem for Houston last fall, the defense was just as important to the jump in wins. Under rising star coordinator Doug Belk, the Cougars held teams to 20.4 points a game - down from 32.4 the previous year. David Anenih and Logan Hall must be replaced up front, and the secondary lost standout cornerbacks Marcus Jones and Damarion Williams. However, a strong foundation still remains in place, with linemen D'Anthony Jones and Derek Parish and linebacker Donavan Mutin poised to lead the way.
Key Games: at UTSA, at Texas Tech, Kansas, at SMU, at Memphis, at East Carolina

25. Penn State

Returning Starters: Offense-6, Defense-6
Key Incoming Transfers:
WR Mitchell Tinsley; OL Hunter Norzad; DL Demeioun Robinson

The Nittany Lions started fast with a promising 5-0 start last year - including a non-conference win against Auburn in Happy Valley - but injuries took a toll as the team stumbled to a 2-6 finish. There's urgency to get back on track in 2022 with the program sporting an 11-11 mark over the last two seasons. Improvement on offense is a must for Penn State to challenge for double-digit wins this fall. This unit averaged only 22.8 points a game and 4.9 yards per play in Big Ten matchups last year. Subpar play from the offensive line was a driving force in the struggles on offense, as the Nittany Lions generated just two rushes of 40-plus yards and averaged 2.96 yards per carry in Big Ten games. Also, no running back eclipsed 100 rushing yards in a game in '21. Quarterback Sean Clifford also has room to improve after averaging 6.5 yards per attempt in conference play and ranking ninth in completion percentage (57.9). If the offensive line takes a step forward, Clifford doesn't lack for playmakers on the outside with Parker Washington, Mitchell Tinsley and KeAndre Lambert-Smith returning. New defensive coordinator Manny Diaz inherits six starters, including tackle PJ Mustipher returning after missing the final eight games due to injury. End Arnold Ebiketie (9.5 sacks) leaves a void in the pass rush, and there are voids to fill at linebacker and in the secondary.
