Devin Leary: 7 Potential Transfer Destinations for the Former NC State QB
NC State quarterback Devin Leary announced his intentions to enter college football’s transfer portal on Monday. Leary was projected as one of the ACC's top quarterbacks but an injury midway through this year limited him to six games. Several teams will be looking for help at quarterback this offseason, and more movement at the position is expected, opening the door for teams to have a need under center.
Leary threw for 3,433 yards and 35 touchdowns at NC State in 2021 and passed for 1,265 yards and 11 scores in '22. He's likely to be one of the top signal-callers in the portal for the '23 season.
Where could Leary land as a transfer? Here are seven teams to watch (in alphabetical order):
7 Potential Transfer Destinations for Devin Leary
Alabama
Could the Crimson Tide look to add a veteran quarterback to bridge the gap between Ty Simpson and Jalen Milroe?
Illinois
Devin's younger brother (Donovan) joined the Illinois roster in the 2022 signing class. Also, Illinois could have an opening at quarterback if Tommy DeVito decides not to return.
Missouri
Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz was at NC State (2018) for Leary's first season on campus and played a role in his recruitment. Even with Brady Cook and Sam Horn slated to return in '23, a reunion at Missouri makes sense. Leary would be a big upgrade for the quarterback room in Columbia.
Nebraska
Casey Thompson could return to Nebraska next year, so this isn't a position of glaring need for new coach Matt Rhule. However, Leary would be an upgrade, and the new staff is looking for help across the board.
Notre Dame
Tyler Buchner's injury early this season left Notre Dame thin on depth at quarterback, but Drew Pyne played well down the stretch and helped the team finish 8-4. However, Pyne opted to transfer, and with little in the way of proven depth behind Buchner, the Fighting Irish should explore options in the portal. Also, having another quarterback to push Buchner should be a priority for coach Marcus Freeman.
South Carolina
It's uncertain whether or not Spencer Rattler will return to South Carolina for the 2023 season. If Rattler opts for the NFL, could a transfer to the Gamecocks make sense for Leary?
Wisconsin
The Badgers are thin at quarterback after Graham Mertz entered the portal. New coach Luke Fickell likely needs to add a couple of players here, and Leary's experience and high-end talent would ensure a quick transition under center for the new staff.
